As strange as it sounds I attended a wedding here. You wouldn’t have known you were in a cemetery unless you looked yo your left or right because the ceremony was held in a location that was full of flowers. While walking out I noticed a lot of historically famous people buried. I can’t wait to go back and take a guided tour as I am a history buff. The grounds are amazing with a lot of flowers and trees.

Historic Oakland Cemetery is a "must see" for anyone visiting the Atlanta area; nearly every aspect of Atlanta's history, from civil war to civil rights and Jewish history to African American history is represented there. Even if history is not one's forte, the beautiful monuments and statues, lush gardens, and serene atmosphere are a wonderful way to experience the city of Atlanta.

Tours on dozens of topics are available, so I recommend checking the website and seeing if there are any of interest; topics range from sports to art to craft beer, and everything in between.

Be sure to check out the museum shop, which has many informative books and fun gifts related to the cemetery.

I love the Oakland Cemetery. The cemetery is kept very nice, has a visitor's center, and tons of beautiful flowers growing throughout. It also has a variety of graves and even some famous people are buried here. One of my favorite (and free) places to go in Atlanta!

You need several hours to wander through this Victorian park like cemetery. The Iris were in bloom and signs proudly let you know what flower is in bloom. The mausoleums are master works of Victorian crypts. Margaret Mitchell is buried there as well as 16 Union and almost 7,000 Confederate soldiers. The cemetery is well kept and guarded. There is an urban legend that where the soldiers are buried that in the evening you hear roll call being called. Honestly, I don’t blame them for haunting this beautiful 48 acres. In the bell tower is a visitor center and books on Georgia’s ghost stories and legends.

We only had an hour to spend here but that was enough to make us want to come back for a longer stay. We were able to see Bobby Jones' grave, Margaret Mitchell's, Maynard Jackson's, the CSA soldiers area and a brief visit to the visitor center. The Spring flowers were beautiful. Just walking from one area to another is so interesting. I highly recommend a visit if you like history and spectacular cemetery architecture.
