Description: The Captain's Wife in Penarth is a country pub & restaurant oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Points for location & interior, staff friendly enough but food was mediocre & pretty pricey for a pub. They had run out of vegetable skewers (?!) on kids menu (we’re not told until time we were ordering ) so meant we had to choose 3 sides. Duck confit meal was tiny for ~£17! Sirloin more medium than m/rare , dripping sauce was quite watery. Kids garlic bread was covered in garlic salt which I can’t imagine is very healthy. We didn’t stay for dessert. Bit if a shame all round really.

Staying local & this place was recommended as it has a nice view. Your stereotypical pub/restaurant in a picturesque location taking advantage of that delivering poor food & service at a premium price. On a Sunday evening they'd ran out of a lot from an already limited menu. 1 in our party doesn't eat red meat but still wanted a roast but there was no non-meat roast option on the menu (unbelievable in 2021!), so they asked for the turkey...No turkey. An alternative of a "non-meat roast" was offered, but was just going to be vegetables & Yorkshire pudding! We negotiated with the waitress & kitchen for a bunless vegetarian burger with roast trimmings. The other 2 of us had a beef & lamb roast... no cauliflower cheese, as they had ran out of that too! Credit where it's due, the calamari starter was great! The roasts were underwhelming! The menu gave an illusion of a plateful of food with lots of vegetables..."ruffled beef dripping roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, thyme-roasted carrots, broccoli, honey-roasted parsnips and roasted courgettes, red onions & peppers. All served with as much gravy as you like." What arrived was 3 small roast potatoes, no parsnips, no courgette, no onion & no peppers! We got a small dish between 2 with a broccoli floret each, a few sliced carrots & green beans (weren't even on the menu!). The potatoes weren't very warm, so clearly not cooked to order & reheated. The gravy came in a tiny jug about 1/3 full. Sticky toffee pudding was dry and not warm.

Cannot fault the wonderful staff at all.
Food was very underwhelming. Ordered a ‘country chicken sandwich’ which was meant to have a whole chicken breast and smashed avocado. The ‘chicken breast’ was absolutely tiny and I only had a piece the size of my thumb in one half of the sandwich (the other was only slightly bigger). My sandwich was mainly just bread. The ‘smashed avocado’ was almost non existent. The ‘avocado’, even under a microscope, would have just looked like a thin green spread on the inside of a slice of bread - spread like thin butter. Have been here before and enjoyed so was very disappointed. No complaints about the service but the food ordered did not reflect what was advertised on the menu.

Managed to get table on busy, sunny Saturday night at 8pm in doors. No surprise, it was busy so no excuse to run out of everything on menu!
The food that did arrive was shocking - eg Hunters Chicken Schnitzel - thrown on the plate with handful of chips scattered over not even a few peas thrown in or a little side salad. Come on it’s not rocket science! Drinks were ok so I’ll stick to those in future though I’m not in any hurry to return.
