The location of this Inn is just perfect for exploring Muir Woods and Mt. Tamalpais which is just what we wanted. There really isn't anywhere else to stay in this location and be so close to the natural wonders of this place.

The Inn itself dates from the 1890s and has been refurbished all the way. I wish I had known that some of the rooms were in the lower level. Our room, #6 was in the very bottom and there were some advantages (quieter than some) but while the walls are pretty thick, we could hear people walking around above us and it did have a basement-y feel. The room itself was clean and well appointed, and the bathroom, had all the amenities and was comfortable though older.

Staying at this place is like staying at a friend's house. It's very casual but the staff is very friendly. The food is excellent and the deck has beautiful views of Sausalito and the bay, and on a clear day you can probably literally see forever. The breakfast is great also, and free, but they recommend a tip of $5 per person.

Because the location is on the Panoramic Highway, there are a fair amount of motorcycles and quite a bit of traffic. While the guest rooms are in the back of the hotel, you can still hear the traffic, especially the vroom vroom of the bikes.

There is free wifi and there are three different connections, but none of them worked that well in our room. The television did work just fine and came with Netflix and some other subscription channels.

Hello Lynn-in-Chapel-Hill, and thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We apologize for the lack of identifying which floor each room was on, at the time of booking. We appreciate the kind words on our staff and food, thank you. Its unfortunate the wifi was not working with you, we have had our service provider re position our wireless adaptors to better serve our inn guest. Once again, thank you for your time and critiques.

Thanks to Trip Advisor I have 54,000 people reading my reviews, the majority are favorable, and I am a serial world traveller, this place is beautifully situated and run without any care for guests. Its dirty, managment reply "its worked for 20 years" when they give you the wrong doorbell entrance code time and time again. The redeeming factor is the wait staff who are at war with a kitchen who se the customer as a nuisance.
It is a MOTEL 6 with a beautiful view

Hello PETER1209, I would like to first and for most thank you for staying with us, also for taking time to write us a review. Its really unfortunate that someone whom travels as much as you, didn’t enjoy your time with us. I am terribly sorry if upon check in one of my staff gave you the wrong door code, we change the code monthly, and have never had a problem with our call box, so I'm not sure who would have made the remark of, “its worked for 20 years”, but as the General Manager here, I can assure you, I did not make that remark. Our wait staff and our kitchen staff are like a big family, sometimes in the middle of a rush its hard to tell, however our staff is really compatible and generally all work as a team. PETER1209, I truly hope that if you are ever in our area again, that you will give us another try, as we have such a good following of guests who think the complete opposite of this review. Once again, thank you for your time, and critiques on our establishment , staff, and my management.

The setting of the Mountain Home Inn is spectacular. The view is the Inn’s chief attraction. The rooms appear in desperate need of a deep clean and renovation: water stains, peeling paint, worn upholstery & carpeting, a multi-plug for electrical (which turned on TV & lights at same time), and mechanical noise, etc. The housekeeping staff would seem hard pressed to overcome these obstacles in providing upkeep. Communication amongst staff is negligible. In fact, on two mornings of our stay, there was no one on front desk-host duty, and the chef had to be routed to wait on guests. The kicker came when we asked for a change of room (for health reasons). The inn appeared to have availability; it seemed we were one of the few occupied rooms for much of our week-long stay. We had alerted the staff to the possibility of a change of plans at least one day prior to making this request. After we made the room change request, we waited half a day for the change to be verified by management, in order to assure we would have the new room for the remainder of our stay. Two days later we were called and told that we needed to move out of our "new" room and go back to the other because our “new” room had been booked by another party. Furthermore, we needed to vacate the room immediately! In our opinion, no apologies, no reasonable explanations, and no consideration were given for this miscommunication. On a final note, we were also going to be charged at the more expensive room rate! We opted to go to the Holiday Inn instead, where we were met by a pleasant staff, well-kempt rooms, and a lovely view.

Hello JAAPMKC,
I would like to first and for most thank you for staying with us, also for taking time to write us a review. I would like to start this reply off with a little information on our inn. We were established in 1912 and have been in business operation ever since. We are high up on Mount Tamalpais, straddling Muir Woods, as stated on our website. We have been in business, ever since then and yes, it takes a lot to maintain our location. We have scheduled weekly and bi weekly deep cleanings for all rooms and common areas, and we work with a great upholster company that maintains all of our furniture, benches, and area rugs. I sincerely apologize if we did not meet your expectations in this regard. As for the communication amongst my staff and not having a front desk individual two of the mornings, please keep in mind that we are a small property, and on nights where we have 3 rooms or less, yes, the chef will cook and serve the guest himself the following mornings. In regards to the room change, we never will deny a guest a opportunity to change a room, as long as one is available. Our weekend’s book up, months in advance in most cases. Our staff never said that you could stay in that room the duration of the stay, as it was already booked, however, we did want you to be able to enjoy your stay so we did give you the room for as many days as it was available. When I called you personally, to tell you that in our computer you were noted as moving back to your original room, I was able to tell that clearly you had not understood when we originally upgraded you, so I did apologize, and explained the situation, that the folks checking in had booked months in advance, and were due to check in within 30 minutes. As for the room rate, looking back at your folder, you were mistakenly charged room 6 rate for you two nights in room 2, I went ahead and made that correction today for you. I do apologize for that mistake. Thank you again for visiting us, we truly hope to see you again.

We flew into San Francisco. It was an easy 45 minute drive here after visiting Fishermans Wharf. We had a lovely room with an awesome view, a great meal and breakfast. No complaints....staff was very congenial and our room was clean and the views AMAZING

Mountain Home Inn (MHI) reminds me of those waterfront restaurants that have the monopoly on the view - they revel in the view, skimp on the service, and become the market for the itinerant tourist.

To be fair, the service in the restaurant is actually quite nice. As it is in the bar as well. And the staff, in general, is quite genial. The issue is that the invisible manager appears not to have delegated enough to the staff, and is often cited as the excuse for not being able to get done simple tasks.

Allow me to cite two examples of the above dilemma, both frightening in their simplicity. The prearranged extra cot was not present upon check in. The attendant apologized and provided the cot in a timely manager, but said he could not get the sheets until the manager was available. Second, upon check out, the bill was wrong. The attendant, though, said the billing software was complicated, and it could not possibly be fixed until the manager showed up. The double whammy in two days sent a pretty clear message.

Finally, there are noise issues by room to be identified, ahead of committing. Some rooms suffer from paper thin walls. Ours suffered from the sound of flushing pipes....once every two minutes...all night long.

So, I net out at three starts - five for the location, four for the dining/bar, three for the rooms, and one for the hotel service. Caveat emptor.
