Owner description: Emerald Mound is the second-largest Indian mound in America.

Pictures do not do this place justice. Photos of the mounds just show the top level. You have to walk up to the first level to appreciate the size and mass of this construction. Also, the walk between the two upper mounds emphasize the size of the project. As a bonus, to get to the Emerald Mound you have to drive the Natchez Trace. Surely, one of the beautiful drives in all of America.

This is an impressive mound but there is not that much to see. As it is just off the Natchez Trace it is probably worth going to however.

This huge mound was built by Indians carrying moderate-sized baskets of soil. A large bushel-basket of soil is so heavy that most people could not carry it. This was a massive enterprise made by a highly organized society. The only larger mound is Monks mound of the Cahokia mounds in Southern Illinois (about 10 miles from St. Louis near I-55).

There is good signage explaining the site. You have to use your imagination but it was once a bustling center. This is the second largest mound site in America and it is amazing to think of doing this by hand without the wheel.
