We booked the afternoon VIP Guided backstage tour for around $60 each. Usually we are on a tight budget and would thoroughly research “value for money” opinions on things like this but, being a wildlife conservation centre we decided that no matter what the tour was like it would be worth investing some money into kiwis regardless.

Laurie was a great guide and whilst we were out of season for eggs and chicks we got a look at the incubator room and “nursery” with a great load of information about kiwis and the work the centres/DOC are doing to increase their numbers.

We then went to see the Tuatara in their backstage enclosure and learnt loads about this 250 million year old DINOSAUR! So cool. Laurie had one that she held so we could get a closer look and whilst we were gutted we couldn’t have a hold too, it is absolutely understandable!

Due to being on the final tour of the day, we didn’t have time afterwards to look around the centre which I hadn’t anticipated. But we were given permission to renter the following day to see the bits we hadn’t a chance to see. (If you only have one day, I would suggest booking an earlier tour or doing the centre prior to the afternoon tour. I would have been very disappointed if we didn’t have time to go back).

We did get a quick sneak into the nocturnal exhibit and saw the 2 kiwis pecking away. They are quite hard to see but you get the idea at least. They are incredibly fascinating birds and unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

If you like zoos you actually might be disappointed. But if you have a genuine interest in kiwis or just wildlife then you can’t go wrong. Learning about them was just as interesting for me as seeing them.

Now I desperately hope to see one in the wild!

Thanks Jessie for such detailed review - really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

To date the team - in partnership with The Department of Conservation and Te Runanga o Makaawhio have hatched over 340 rowi kiwi here inside the West Coast Wildlife Centre and with less than 600 left alive in the wild today helped bring the worlds rarest kiwi back from the very edge of extinction.

You visit has helped us carry on our conservation work - many thanks !.

Although there were only 2 kiwi in residence when we visited it was amazing to be so close to them! They were super cute and so inquisitive with the keeper. Good display on glaciers as well and 4 tuataras to spot. Good activity for a rainy day.
