Built in 1842, this Greek Revival antebellum mansion has been converted into an elegant bed-and-breakfast, the No. 1 hotel in Macon, Georgia. Located at 353 College Street, at 2nd Avenue, nestled atop a hill with a panoramic view of the city, 1842 Inn oozes with architectural beauty, including 17 columns, a wraparound veranda and a front portico for guests to enjoy the scenery. The property also includes a bar/lounge, an adjacent Victorian cottage, fine English antiques and paintings, oriental carpets, tapestries and elaborate draperies. Is this Tara or what? My wife and I stayed here with friends in the 1990s but today the venue is even grander than ever. Luxurious, clean, sparkling, charming, what original owner John Gresham must have envisioned when the former mayor of Macon and wealthy merchant designed the house and while he lived in it until 1900. Interestingly, my wife and I booked the John Gresham Room for our visit. Located upstairs in the mansion, it features a king-size bed, private bathroom, free wi-fi, flat screen TV and iron and ironing board. Guests immediately sense they are in for a special experience upon arrival, when they are greeted with complimentary hor d'oeuvres. Other amenities include a 24-hour front desk, free parking, concierge, complimentary internet access and a complimentary full breakfast with a morning newspaper. This is what Southern hospitality is all about.More
