If you're reading this review on TripAdvisor, search no more! You won't find a better B and B near Kona and the reviews prove it. When a friend recommended this inn I searched TA for reviews. It was difficult to find the listing- I had to type in the name, but when it popped up, I was surprised to find no reviews for the year 2016 but a clear majority of five star ones for previous years. I wondered why but had confidence based on the earlier ones. Now I know why. All the wonderful things about it have already been written! Yes, the ranch setting is amazing, the gourmet breakfasts generous, Clem and Mike are wonderful hosts, the rooms and outdoor cooking area are comfortable and convenient and the views are heavenly. In fact, I could just spend the day on sight except for drives to the ocean. So this updated review is to encourage you to believe that all the previous ones are still true! Maybe I can add a few details that were helpful to me. No deposit is taken at booking and the reservation can be cancelled without penalty. Not true of most VRBO or AirBnB reservations. The breakfast is served during a time period not just at one seating. You can eat on your own private lanai if you'd prefer. And did I mention gourmet breakfasts? For example, banana pancakes, fresh tropical fruit, quiche, eggs, sausage, homemade syrups and jams, fried rice( unusual but delicious), lox and bagels to name a few of the delicacies. So look no further! You will enjoy your stay and the hospitality of Clem and Mike if you choose Horizon Guest House!

Horizon Guest House is a bit out of the way, but because it is relatively high up on the flank of the mountain, it is a good bit cooler than anyplace along the coast or down in Kailua-Kona or Captain Cook. Mike was a great host and prepared wonderful breakfasts, using fruits from their own garden even though we were a there a bit early in the season. His advice about attractions to visit and how to get there was very helpful. We also enjoyed their menagerie of animals (horses, goats, cow, dogs, and cat). The place can be a bit tricky to find in the dark, even after you have been in and out a few times, so try to get there in the daylight when you arrive. Rooms are spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable with beautiful views and almost all day breezes. You can even buy your own meats and barbecue if you like. This is a really great place to stay on Hawaii if you like really good breakfasts, friendly hosts and a relaxing quiet atmosphere.

We arrived after dark which in itself was an interesting experience as we were tired after a flight from Dallas and were driving an unfamiliar car on the "wrong" side of the road and in complete darkness. "Bruno" came to meet us as he did every time we came back from our travels during our three day stay.
We woke up the following morning to find we were in paradise - set on a farm with rural and sea views, a superb infinity pool complete with barbequeue, lots of birds, animals and flowers and wonderful hosts.
Good advice from Clem as to where to eat, what to see and how to get there. Superb buffet breakfasts which would be hard to beat anywhere. Very spacious and comfortable room together with excellent laundry facilities and plenty of equipment for snorkelling.
Only downsides were it seemed a bit pricey, but perhaps that's Hawaii for you, and the room was a bit dusty in places - we found that purely by chance when we dropped something on the floor and had to move the bedside table to retrieve it.
Overall though a very enjoyable stay on our first visit to Hawaii.

If you made it this far, look no further. Just book and relax.

Wife and I stayed with Clem for 5 days in April '15. What an incredible place to stay. You can keep your resorts and expensive drinks.

Things to know.

Breakfast is amazing. Eat lots and fill up cause everyday is an adventure. Or don't leave the grounds. Just relax, read by the pool, and take in the incredible views.

You'll be doing quite a bit driving. Was fine for us. The beach/snorkeling are near by. Clem has all the gear you need. Have questions, I'm sure Clem can answer, but take it from the hip mid 30's brooklynites when we say you'll love it at Horizon Guest House.

ps. Go Hawks!

Part farm and part rescue shelter for a menagerie of stray creatures, Horizon House is the most welcoming and hospitable inn my wife and I have stayed at in the 18 years we have been travelling together. We visited on the recommendation of friends who had raved about it and were glad we did.

Clem and Mike are world-class innkeepers. It’s clear that Clem loves the hospitality profession and he excels in serving as a warm host and expert guide to the South Kona Coasts hidden gems. Breakfast was fantastic, with a variety of tropical fruits picked fresh from the trees on the property, warm homemade breads or rolls, the best coffee we had on the island and a changing main course. Every meal was a treat with Clem’s pancakes and eggs and Mike’s Portuguese sweetbread French toast being the highlights.

Clem is a long-time resident of the Big Island and he spent years designing and building the inn and his care and skill are evident in every detail. The main house is walled by huge sliding windows that remain open during the day and look out on a fantastic view of the south coast. The effect is that of a magnificent lanai, warm sea breezes carry the scent of local flowers through the great rooms.

My wife and I are rarely drawn to hang out and socialize in the common areas of inns but the setting was so peaceful we found ourselves spending hours in conversation with the other guests and just relaxing there. Two friendly dogs, Bebe and Bruno, and one shy cat round out the homey vibe inside the house while cows, goats, donkeys, horses, numerous birds and a turtle named Myrtle live on the land surrounding the house.
Horizon House is closely located to Place of Refuge State Park (and local favorite “Two Step” snorkeling beach that adjoins it. The Captain Cook memorial is also nearby and there are a lot of great day trips in the area.

Clem is also a great source of tips and referrals for every travel preference, weather condition and length of stay. He lingered over breakfast each morning to hear of our plans and offer trips and restaurant recommendations. My wife and I are frequent travelers and find ourselves in agreement that Horizon House is the most charming inn we have ever stayed in. We give it our highest recommendation.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great.
