We showed up on one of the hottest days of the year and were certain that no one would be around, until Randy called to us walking around the back yard. He happily opened the already locked up exhibits and even offered us bottled water. After walking into the house he talked about the Steves family like he knew them personally.

The house is absolutely wonderful with impeccable workmanship and fascinating history. It is not like anything else we have seen previously. Although the home is now fully air conditioned, it was very easy to get a real sense of what it was like to live there. After viewing the home we want to visit every other home on the block and learn as much about the history of the King William district as possible.

The best part of the tour was Randy. Go see him and say hi.

Thank Kerry S

We love looking at historic homes when we travel. This home was well worth the visit. Very well preserved with a very good tour. Lots of interesting stories about the family that lived here. Well worth the price of admission.

This tour was the highlight of our visit in San Antonio. Our charismatic guide Randy was the best tour guide I have ever experienced. He was fun, informative and just downright cool! His stories about the Steves family made the house come to life. We left feeling happy and very glad we had visited. I highly recommend taking this step back in time if you are in the historic district. Thank you so much Randy!!

P.S. don't miss out examining the micro-mosaic table, it is beautiful!

We took the self-guided tour of this wonderful old house at the edge of the King William Historic Disrict and overlooking the San Antonio River. The tour is $7 for adults with discounts for Seniors and Military. The attendee is given a guide book with interesting tidbits about the house, rooms, and furnishings. The house is beautifully restored, and has many lovely period furniture pieces, including original Steves items and furniture returned to the house by collectors who realized the connection to this important German immigrant family. We especially appreciated the German-language signs and inscriptions from the original 1800s construction and decoration. In addition to the house are the fabulous grounds, with stately red oak, pecan, and cyprus trees creating a shady respite on hot days, and even some early-1900 coaches and buggies out back in the old stables. This property is right down the street from the Guenther's House, a restaurant and museum in the house of the founder of the Pioneer Flour Mills. Don't miss it!

Our tour guide was great. I'm not sure if you would have the same experience with another guide, but since we were the only people there at the time he showed us the third floor which isn't restored but had some nice views of the garden and antique furniture which is stored up there. The rest of the house is very interesting as well and our guide offered very much information occasionally apologizing if he was going on too long. He was concerned about keeping his information at a level consistent with what we wanted to know. We wanted to know everything.
