Buffalo's orchestra is first rate and is usually well conducted by its long-time music director, JoAnn Falletta. Unfortunately, it caters to a very conservative clientele; the program tends to lean excessively on warhorses by Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff etc. More adventurous programming would do a lot of good. Presently the audience mostly consists of whiteheaded stalwarts and often does not begin to fill Kleinhans Music Hall, the orchestra's wonderful performance site. Under former music directors (especially Lukas Foss and Michael Tilson Thomas) the fare was much livelier and attracted a younger crowd. I am also not fond of the tendency of treating Pops and Classical as if they were exchangeable. As far as I'm concerned, I'd never miss the Pops concerts if they disappeared, though I understand that musicians must make a living.
