“Wonderful Club Luba”
Reviewed 23 February 2014 via mobile

I would agree with Kuoni's rating on this hotel and give it 3.5 out of 5.

The hotel stff were very friendly with some being more attentive and cheerful than others. The food was good but be warned, there was a lack of western food. This suited us just fine however as we didnt go half way across the world to eat pizza and chips. Expect Sri Lankan curries, rice, salad bar, and various desserts amongst other delights.

The rooms were fairly basic (deluxe room 103) but were very clean, with air conditioning and nice powerful hot showers. Tip the room boys for extra towels which they will often leave in various animal shapes such as turtles, elephants etc.

The best bit about this hotel is the location. To one side there is a river with lots of mangroves and to the other a lovely beach. I recommend asking Anura (one of the beach boys) to take you round the mangroves one morning. We saw crocodiles, water monitor lizards, various birds of prey, tree frogs and even a bird of paradise. The beach was lovely but pay attention to the flag warnings as the current gets very strong. On the beach to the right there is a buddist temple which should not be missed and is free to look around.

On to the wonderful Luba. We wanted to see a bit of Sri Lanka and had read all the other reviews about Luba so decided to find out what he could do for us. We were not disappointed! Our main goal was to take a safari at Yala National Park. We left at 6am and returned the next day in time for dinner. The safari was far better than we had expected and saw elephants, crocodiles, mongoose, water buffalo, monkeys, warthogs, a leopard and many other animals. This trip was luxury travel for a very very good price. Whilst away for the 2 days Luba also took us to: gemstone mine, tea plantation, elephant transit home (Udawala)and Galle Fortress. The hotel we stayed at just by Yala which was included in his price was also very good. I cannot recommend Luba enough and he deserves all the praise he gets on this site. He can be found in the beach hut or contacted on +94777405152 or lubatours@gmail.com

All in all a lovely stay and would certainly go back.

This was our second visit in two years. Pleased to see the same staff as last year and much is the same, they seemed to have replaced the mattresses on the beds which is good. Plenty of space and loungers even when full which it usually is. Lots of eastern and western Europeans come here as well as locals and Indian people. Excellent choice of food and quality is good. Generally its more rustic and posh, probably about a three star hotel but the staff are excellent and very friendly. Location is good for the town and attractions such as Yala (4 hours drive). Beach is huge and stunning and generally pretty clean. The sea is warm and nice waves if you want to splash around or try boogy boards. They have jet skis, water skiing and paraflying which is good if you like sports and noisy if you don't. No aircraft noise here other than light planes and the odd helicopter. Problems... main one is the internet access which requires a card for 250 rupees (£1.25) which gives one hour over a 24 hour period, feels like the dark ages since all other hotels have free internet, i complained to Mr Perrera the manager and he listened to me. No internet in the rooms only in reception and the bar area. Other hotels have nicer lounge areas I think. The pool is cleaned and tested regularly and they seem to have removed most of the monitor lizards from the place since last year. There are sand flies around but we didn't have mosquito problems. Overall many people come back here year after year and we like the place.

Room Tip: some say upstairs rooms are hot, we prefer upstairs for less noise. Room 402 looks very nice. Bungal...

We have been in Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and fly home tomorrow, we have had an amazing time travelling around with a private driver to all sorts of hotels all of which we're amazing, until we reached club bentota, it was recommended to us as our last stop for 11 days supposedly for relaxation before going home after a long time travelling to different regions of Sri Lanka. It could not have been any worse the staff were rude and miserable on arriving, they showed us to our room which was supposed to be deluxe!!!!! It was awful very tired and tatty, and after all the wonderful hotels we had stayed in it was a big let down. The entertainment was like being at butlins with sunshine or magaluf, fine if you like that sort of thing. The food is very basic and you have to fight for anything decent as they do not replenish during the meals, we heared and spoke to a lot of other guests who felt the same as we did. We complained to kuoni and they eventually moved us to a better standard of hotel nearer to Colombo which was wonderful, we could not wait to get away from club bentota it was a real let down. The journey over to the hotel was the only best bit, oh and of course the trip away!

Room Tip: Don't go in the first place.

Stayed here for two weeks in november 2013 and we enjoyed it wery much. The food is excellent the. Our room was very fine and also the cleaning of our room. Nice pool-area and not a long way to go if you want to swim in the ocean. Couldn´t be better. We have recommended this hotel to all our friends.

We stayed at this hotel for 10 days end of Jan and beginning of Feb, this was our first trip to Sri Lanka and will not be our last.

Its a long way but worth it, the flight is overnight from Heathrow, we had a delay once seated on the plane (not Sri Lankan Airlines fault) but it did mean that we were sat on the plane for a very long time. Arrival and baggage reclaim was quick and painless at Colombo. The money exchange rate at Colombo Airport was far better than the hotels.

We were met by the Kuoni rep who introduced us to our driver, I don't think they had been told about the delay. As in previous posts we were asked if we wanted to pay for the fast road, it costs 300 rupees (£1.50 ish) it really is worth it, it reduces the transfer time by half.

Arrival at the hotel, so lovely to cross the river on the boat, upon a arrival at the hotel we were greeted with cold drinks, checking in to the hotel was fast.

Rooms

Our Room was lovely - we paid for a deluxe but were upgraded to a suite (Thank you so much Club Bentota)

I have to say it was wonderful in every way, The bed was huge and so so comfortable, the sleep quality was excellent. The bathroom was divided into three parts a toileting area, washing area with double sinks and finally a large open air shower. Unlike many hotels, there was so much storage space and more hangers than we had clothes. The room was decorated in a contemporary style. The room itself was spotless, the boy who made up our room did a fab job. The room came complete with a television (which we didn't use) Mosquito Plug and a couple of refills (Which we did use), Tea, Coffee and water are replaced daily as are the complementary toiletries. The room also has a free safe

Food and Drink
Food was lovely - I am a vegetarian and I always found something lovely to eat, now if you want burgers, chips and pizza then this is not the place for you as thankfully you find them at Club Bentota, But if you are looking for Sri Lankan food, full of flavour and you enjoy trying new things such as Hoppers and String Hoppers then this is the place for you and you will enjoy,

Wine there is some confusion regarding wine and green bands, the majority of guests wear yellow bands, these guests do not have wine included in their all-inclusive package. British guest are able to order wine from the bar and have wine with lunch or dinner.

Trips
We booked trips with both Luba and Kuoni,

The trips with Luba were by far the better trips, I know people are wary of booking trips from Beach Boys but Luba was professional from start to finish. Not only was Luba's knowledge excellent, but he ensured that all members of the group were catered for at all times. I was worried about the quality of the hotel and minbus on the Yala Safari, but the minibus was far better that the one used on the trip booked by Kuoni, and the hotel was a good transit hotel used by the major tour operators, I even bumped into a couple who were at Heathrow with us. Luba's eyesight is far better than ours, but after spotting animals, Luba spent a lot of time with us and helped us to frame the perfect shot on our cameras. Thank you Luba I have some excellent photos of the Leopard

We did have several issues with the trip booked directly with Kuoni, although I must say that Kuoni purchased the trip from Thomas Cook and I feel that it really was Thomas Cook who cut corners not Kuoni. I must say that as soon as Kuoni were made aware the issues they did everything in their power to rectify the situation quickly. Thank you Kuoni for your speedy response.

Money Exchange
if you use a bank remember to take your passport or get a Tuk Tuk (100 rupees) and ask for the Royal Pharmacy, a much better exchange rate and you dont need your passport.

Hope you enjoy your holiday as much as we did
