The port is easy to access for work if attending any of the many Dutch fishing vessels based thier. Usual good shore side support from several shore based maintenance companies. About a one hour drive from Schiphol.

Boarding was simple and everything went as planned. Suggest you book tickets online ahead of time. Nice terminal with services and vending machines.

Currently - and for some more years likely - they are building a replica of the 'explorer' Willem Barentsz used while trying to discover a trade route 'By the North' (sailing to East India while sailing the seas north of Russia).
They failed and ended up on an island called Nova Zembla.
Anyway.. you can visit the shipyard for free and they do tours from April till 1 November.

Also great at that boulevard is an old engine house or barn where the 'Brouwers Dok' is located. In a relaxed ambiance you can taste several real great beers they brew in Harlingen.
There is no good directions to it, but make sure to walk around the two big barracks that are there to see if they are open today.

Thank Hans V

Much to see and do. You can walk or take a bike ride. Lots of cafés to sit and watch the activity. Boats seem to be going in and out at all times...ferries, sailing ships, cruisers...nice to view. Very picturesque. We sent all afternoon there and enjoyed our time very much.

I only had a few hours to explore the old town of Harlingen before taking the ferry to Terschelling, but was pleasantly surprised by the many old and small, but nicely renovated buildings and everywhere water and boats. There are multiple harbours, some hosting very nice old sailing boats. In general a very pleasant town to spent a few hours wandering around. There are 2 train stops in town, the Harlingen Haven (last stop on the line) is easiest for exploring the old town.
