We booked this hotel having been considering two, the other nearer Arona town; what you don’t get nearer the town is the just superbly situated georgous view being higher up; no ‘just other superb view’ of the lake; the lake moves away to the right and ditto turning to your left, giving such a characterful 180 view of the lake with such depth, with mountains beyond too giving just one of the best lakes and best lake views we think we have seen & we visit ALOT of lakes! It’s a passion of ours for many years.
Just felt at home the minute we came into reception - when we phoned earlier, reception had offered to reserve thier last lake view room simply because it was thier last, without a deposit as just by speaking they trusted us to arrive; impressive.
After seeing the view from the Restarant we took up receptions offer to eat with them; we live in a tourist resort in France and are very spoilt indeed with a huge number of excellent restaurants; we struggled to remember a meal better than the one we had at the hotel’s own restarant, recognised by locals as we saw people not staying at the hotel come to dine.
Hotel couldn’t be more helpful, offering us a coffee if we wanted one 2 or 3 times & other kindnesses including helping phone to assist when our car wouldn’t work.
Rooms have wall to wall glass patio doors on lakeside giving simply one of the best views I think I have ever seen as mentioned - I love old buildings, of which I think there is history to this hotel too, but the older buildings don’t have wall to wall doors made of glass; simply fantastic.
The statue is bizarrely amazing to me nearby the hotel; the second largest statue in the world & I had never heard of it (1st largest is Statue of Liberty!!) and there is this simply stunning statue just there by chance; it should feel imposing due to its size, but it totally works & adds another dimension to an already interesting place with some really lovely old buildings around to wander past.
Last bit to mention (I’m a designer by trade) much apreciated the pieces of art (prints, some in glass) around the hotel, Gustav Klimpt, & they really work, especially the piece in the dining room; loved seeing those.
120% out of 100% - we are raving fans of this place - don’t expect grandeur and pomp here - it’s really well done hotel with heart created by those ‘more old school’ people in hospitality that truly care, and are truly good at what they do, a rare combination in todays world.

My husband says - Great food service and views - great combination of professional and personal (I’m always a lot more verbose ;-)

Good, small hotel with lovely views.
Many rooms facing lake, with balconies so that you can enjoy the stunning location.
Rooms are good sized, clean and comfortable.
Breakfast choices good, home made cakes each day, fresh fruits.
A little gem, at very good value price.

The San Carlo hotel provides excellent value for money as a B&B: Room is quite spacious, clean, with a comfortable bed. The view from the restaurant terrace is wonderful and a fabulous place to enjoy breakfast which is better than average.
Only real shortcoming, no pool.
We did not eat lunch or dinner at the restaurant.

Room tip: Ask for lake side room.

The San Carlo hotel provides excellent value for money as a B&B: Room is quite spacious, clean, with a comfortable bed, and we even got a room with a huge private terrace with a magnificent view of the Lago Maggiore - all for the basic price of EUR 100 for the night. I would assume prices to rise sharply in the Summer season. But with this location, and proximity to the Milan Airport - Malpensa, the San Carlo is a great find in the southern part of the lake - in Ancona.
However, when you hear the sentence "I have ristorante" at check-in: Be aware, nod, smile, and quickly come up with an excuse for not making a dinner reservation: Already eaten; not hungry; made a previous arrangement at a different restorant, etc. Unfortunately, we did not, and ended up with the worst "gourmet meal" ever experienced in Italy. From the menu and its prices, you look forward to each course. From the first taste you wish you could leave immediately, and by the end of the meal you have sworn to not eat again for a long time. And by the time you shall check out, you realize that your unfortunate visit to the restaurant ended up costing you more than the night at the hotel! So in short: Excellent stay at the hotel if you stay away from the culinary offerings of the restaurant.
