Owner description: Gaustabanen, the cable car inside Gaustatoppen mountain has been a well-kept secret. Gaustabanen consists of a battery driven car on a cable that carries passengers approximately 860 metres horizontally up inside the mountain. Right in the centre of the mountain there is a station, with an angled shuttle line of 1040 metres that rises to 1800 metres above sea level. From the top, there is an exit to the so-called Tuddalstippen, situated right under the Gaustatoppen Tourist Cabin.

If you are afraid of the dark and steep climbs/heights, this is not for you! This is a 8 minute journey through the mountain on a 39 degree incline which takes you up from the base of the mountain to the top (Gautatoppen). Unless one would like to trek, this is the only way up. Note that return tickets are more economical than a single journey.

The train cost 350,- kr for one person up and down. You can always take it just up and walk down if you want.
The ride takes about 20 minutes and is quite nice. You ride inside the mountain, through these old tunnels, made by the military during the cold war.

This small inside-the-mountain train takes you up to Gaustatoppen (the top of the mountain) and some spectacular views of 1/6th of Norway's land mass on a clear day. We really enjoyed the ride and the views from the top. It is a masterful engineering feat. Note- If it is cool down below, it will most likely be even cooler on the top. We were glad with had jackets, hats and gloves in July.

Great experience with kids to go to the top of the mountain through the inside! It is an impressive build and show some post war history when Gaustatop was a monitor station for NATO.
It is indeed a pricy excursion but definetely worth it. Would recommend on a clear day to take a one way up and walk down. Once up there is not so much to do apart fromenjoying the viewon Norway pr experience being in the clouds while eating delicious waffles. It is a 20 min walk to the highest point.

This probably one of the most special way to get up a mountain. Since the train was build for the military, it is not very luxurious.
If you have problem with loud sound, you should take some earplugs for the tram. The funicular is very steep. Try to get in the lowest compartment, unless you have a fear of height.

In overall an experience you won't forget. Only downside is the price.
