We were thrilled to find a fish and chip shop that actually offered grilled fish instead of the usual battered and deep fried offering. The fish was delicious - it was wrapped in alfoil and baking paper and had been grilled with tomato and onion keeping it lovely and moist! Thank you for being open and Happy Easter!!

First off, we have a vacation home in Hanmer Springs so consider ourselves locals. I’ve had fish and chips on four continents and the fish at Hanmer Fish & Chip Shop is THE WORST I’ve ever had. I ordered blue cod. Cost? $10 NZD. For travelers this is GBP 5.15 and USD 7.25. For one piece of fish. Now, your question good reader is: what size was that one piece of fish for $10? Smaller than a hot dog. How is this even possible? Perhaps this piece of cod was genetically modified to be small? Perhaps this piece of cod was caught in its infancy before it hit their prime of its life? Perhaps it wasn’t even cod and was hoki? It is one of life’s great mysteries. But one thing is clear - Hanmer Fish & Chips sold this scrawny piece of greasy, oily fish for $10 with any care or concern greedily taking tourists’ money over the Easter weekend and absolutely ripping off the consumer. We immediately called the shop and were offered a refund for the fish. When we went down to collect the refund the owner wanted the fish back! Maybe to sell it on? When presented with this photo the owner offered a 50% refund. Not only does Hanmer Fish & Chip Shop have the gall to put such a small piece of fish in a customer’s meal for $10, they can’t even be bothered to honour a refund 30 minutes after offering it. Only after a full blown argument with the owner in the middle of the shop were we given our $10 back. The sad thing - nobody working there denied that they did wrong. At least have the courage to stand behind your product, but I guess you can’t when you know you’ve done wrong. At least take pride in what you do, but I guess you can’t when the pinnacle of your life’s work is stumbling through the ownership of a lowly rated chip shop in a small town. Hanmer Fish & Chip Shop you have earned this rating and review because of your failure to even acknowledge or apologise for this rip off.

After a long day, take away fish & chips was a winner from Hanmer Fish & Chips. Good selection and reasonable prices. No salad but I purchased a good salad from the supermarket next door.

Convienantly located near the pools and had seating inside and outside the shop. Service was OK and the prices were higher than you'd find in town but it is a tourist area.

Had crumbed Hoki which was good and the pieces were large. Clearly not processed. Chips were good.

The shop seems confused between modern and 80's. Did have some retro arcade games but they weren't working. Could do with a make over.

We had been looking forward to a nice piece of Blue Cod and chips special for our dinner. It was a bit disappointing really. A beautiful balmy Saturday night in Hanmer Springs but the blue cod & chips was rather a disappointment.
One average size, pale piece of blue cod which could have been cooked more so it at least was a golden colour and a small handful of chips for $12. I think it was over priced and under delivered in my opinion. Next time we might try another f&c shop.
