The staff at the Montana couldn't be nicer, helping us change travel plans, etc. We stayed down the hill which made for some long walks to the main office as well as to town. The hotel is not far from town (although very hilly).

Room Tip: This is a hilly property...

This is a hilly property and a car is very helpful. Our rooms were towards the top of the hill and had excellent views of the valley below. Views were level with the clouds! The rooms are OK, not luxurious, but roomy. The hotel was very helpful booking side trips including zip lining, coffee plantation tours, and tours of the Monteverde Cloud forest. There is a lovely restaurant on site with beautiful views, great food, excellent service though a little pricey. An entry level zip line course is available on the property. There is also hiking in the hills behind the hotel where sloths were sited in the evenings. I would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: rooms up the hill have best views, rooms closer to lobby are most accessible

The hotel may have been a hit in the 70s/80s but in 2017 you expect better.
The description needs to be updated as there is no hot tub or swimming pool. As it's really windy you can hear the wind travel through your room when sleeping so can sometimes wake you up. Also no wifi in your room, you can only get it at the bar or reception desk.
Overall the staff were great and sorted out taxis for us and even rang up tour companies when they were running late to see where they were. Would I stay there again? No but the views from the rooms are worth it. I can see a lot of potential for this place, just needs a face lift.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before settling

We were pleasantly surprised by this place. We stayed in three rooms set down away from the main building. Our view of the Nicoya Peninsula was spectacular. The rooms were comfortable and simple. Our only complaint is that the restaurant isn't very good. The included breakfasts were okay but didn't feature many options and the dinner wasn't good at all. Still, everyone was typical Costa Rican friendly and I can't state enough how incredible the rooms are. The hotel is very close to Santa Elena which is a really nice little town and of course all things that the Cloud Forest and Monteverde have to offer are very close by.

Beautiful hotel, amazing views, a bit past prime, but it has soul. Wonderful breakfast.Owner and family were very accommodating, it felt like staying with a (distant) relative.
Rooms could use a coffee maker.
