Let me start by saying I'm saddened about some of the reviews. This is not a 5 star luxury resort. This is a rustic cabin experience in a third world country so you might not have Wifi service! We found this place to be charming and loved the location. Food was great we had both breakfast and dinner here. My 5 star rating is based on the rustic cabin experience - I'm not comparing it to a 5 star luxury resort. We also found the service to be excellent.

We stayed for 2 nights mid January, we selected this location due to our interest in wild life photography. We were allocated lodge 16 which was clean & basic but it covered all our needs. The weather was against us as it was wetter & colder than normal at this time of year.
The staff were very friendly and when they noticed our interest in Wild life they promptly placed bananas on the feeding stands which bought in an array of bird life and mammals. Both evenings while having dinner we saw an olingo which is obviously a regular visitor to the lodge. The humming bird feeders are situated just outside the sliding glass windows which allows you some stunning photo opportunities even when raining.
The restaurant and viewing area has glass sliding Windows along the whole length allowing many people to view at the same time, there is also an outside veranda that you can sit out at.
Our stay was on a bed & breakfast rate, we had no transport so relied on transport through tours or walking so we ate at the restaurant in the evenings & could not fault the food or service.

The hotel is situated at the edge of the cloud forest, so close encounters with the resident wildlife are inevitable. Agouti and coati mundi are regular visitors, the latter are constantly trying to get into the waste bins of the hotel. Capuchin monkeys also visit the grounds frequently and care should be taken: the large males may turn aggressive, as I witnessed at one occasion, luckily, the doors were closed and no harm done. The hotel has feeding places for birds, so excellent bird sightings are possible just on the terrace or from the restaurant windows. The rooms at the lodges are comfortable, if simple. Note – it will be quite cool at night, it is cloud forest. There were only two small cons: usual Costa Rican story of three towels per two persons and one key per lodge for two even independent persons. Breakfast is OK, no buffet and three choices. Anything additional to the chosen version will be quite pricey. Be careful if wishing to explore the forest. The trails are not very well marked and the longer one is ill-maintained.

Thank you very much for your review!

I am glad you enjoyed your overall experience at Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge. We are constantly working to improve our trails for our guest to enjoy. The Coatis are harmless, un less you try to hand feed them or pet them. We have signs in different areas of the hotel warning clients not to feed the animals. One of the main reason our guest enjoy their stay at our Lodge is all the wildlife they can experience just outside their room.

We stayed at the lodge for two nights and our room was very spacious. There were two beds and a sofa alongside a small table which held a coffee maker - the only place we stayed that had one. The bathroom was also a good size and the shower always had hot water, great after a traipse in the forest. The restaurant served several types of breakfast, all prepared to order and included fresh fruit, cooked eggs and granola - you ordered from a menu card. The staff were so hospitable and friendly. We chose to have a our evening meals at the restaurant on both nights as the food was delicious, I had a thick juicy steak cooked perfectly. The meal portions were generous and we never went hungry. Happy hour was a great time to put your feet up, watch the hummingbirds and sip the 2-4-1 cocktails, beers or wine. We were permitted to order our drinks during happy hour and save them until we wanted them later in the evening, mostly with dinner. The garden below the main lodge is great for spotting Coati, Agouti and even more birds. You can also see, and hear, those brave enough to do the nearby zip-lines. A delightful relaxing place, I only wish we could have stayed longer.

This is an eco lodge located on a 72 acre preserve. It is a nature lovers dream. Particularly good for birders. The staff is 5 star. Gustavo in the restaurant was a delight and the general manager, Wilberth, is charming amd runs an exceptionally well managed hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable, although rustic. The grounds and hiking trails are well maintained. We live in Costa Rica and even we saw wildlife here we had not seen before. Self guided hikes, a zip line and a guided night tour were offered on site. Monteverde Reserve is close by, as are other attractions.
Note: If you are looking for a resort, climate controlled rooms or a tv in your room stay at one of the resorts in the area( expect to pay double or more).
