After a morning exploring the temples in Paestum, we made the short trip to Agropoli to eat. Il Ceppo was a very nice restaurant, and I would recommend the food to anyone in the area, however there were one or two things that bothered me slightly.
The restaurant was quite cold - it was December but it would have nice to have some more heating, especially as there were very large windows and stone floors. Also, the television in the dining room was on for the entire duration of our visit. I don't mind this in a bar, but it was an unwelcome distraction in a restaurant and one of our party had to ask for the volume to be turned down a bit.
The food was very good, and the portions were extremely generous. I would recommend the mozzarella to anyone visiting, as it is possibly the best mozzarella I've ever eaten. I had a simple pasta dish as a first course, which was excellent, and a chicken fillet for a second course. The chicken was actually far too big, so much so that it was a real struggle to eat. Chicken isn't the most interesting meat, and it did feel a little bland. For dessert we had a chocolate cheesecake, which even though it wasn't really a cheesecake, was absolutely divine.
My main problem with the second course was that the other 5 people in our party were brought their meals, and then the waiter went to serve another table before bringing me my second course - I think I was waiting 5 minutes!
It was, however, excellent value for money - I think we ended up paying €25 each, which was incredible considering how large the servings were and the quality of the food. The service was generally good, although I felt that when we arrived and left, the staff were trying a little hard to make us feel welcome, which made me feel that it was all a little forced.
All in all, I would recommend Il Ceppo, as the food was good and the value excellent.
