We were on a hiking holiday and the organisers had booked rooms that were below our usual standard. Here we had an 'economy room' (number 203), and it was rather small and dingy, though the bed was comfortable enough and the bathroom clean and functional. The room had only one small window, too far off-centre to provide the fresh air I need when sleeping, but it did offer a superb view over the valley. The hotel itself is an old monastery, and you enter through the cloisters - very atmospheric! It is right in the centre of the old town, next to the Piccolomini Palace and close to all of the shops and restaurants. At least the rooms overlooking the valley are very quiet, though the two rooms opposite contained a noisy Scandanavian family who considered the corridor to be part of their room, and the corridor seating to be a suitable place to eat their sandwiches and spread crumbs all over the carpet; we also saw them in one of the restaurants in town, breaking glasses and making a general nuisance of themselves. Still, this was not the fault of the hotel.... The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and although the breakfast was only average the views from the large terrace were spectacular. We would give this hotel another chance if we revisit Pienza, but we would steer away from the cheapest room category.

Room Tip: Don't select 'economy rooms'. Get a room overlooking the valley.

The economy room was slightly bigger than expected. The location is perfect and the view from the garden was amazing. We had breakfast on the terrace in October and it was a good experience. Very nice hotel which offers good deals!

The entrance and grounds are grand and historic. The location is great. However the rooms are tired and very basic. The bed sinks when you sit. The phone was missing from our room. But there's an elevator at least while much of old pienza relies on stairs. It's like a motel 6 in the room.

We have previously stayed in Pienza, but this was our first visit to Il Chiostro, which is truly part of the renaissance city. The parking experience of a previous reviewer (CD) completely echoes ours. The receptionist who booked us in was completely devoid of warmth, but once we arrived in our suite we were pleased to see just how large and atmospheric it was with the frescoes on the ceiling, and a comfortable seating area. The bathroom was good. All in all we slept well in this ex-convent. It is certainly an experience we are glad to have had.

We didn't dine in the hotel, but the standard breakfast was served out on the terrace with a view of the lovely Val d'Orcia. I don't know if the produce was local, but the ham, the cheeses and the bread were really delicious.

Although the reception area was staffed at all times, not once during our stay did any person in reception acknowledge us (or anyone else). It might seem a small thing, but it costs nothing and makes a guest feel welcome.
