Outwardly looks like a very nice hotel and staff were all welcoming and helpful but the decor, cleanliness and comfort of the rooms let it down badly.
We had a double room booked, the bed was very uncomfortable and not full length our feet were hanging off the end - neither of us are six foot!! It was the same in our teenage children's room who had twin beds! So not a lot of sleep had between the four of us.
The paintwork was stained on the walls and lots of cobwebs.
The bedside lights are above the headboard as are the switches but they are so high you have to stand up to switch them off and on- a bit annoying when you are nice and sleepy!
The cups in the bedroom were not clean.
Bathroom was nice except for water stains all over the walls suggesting a flood from the room above!
Cooked breakfast was lovely if you wanted to order it. Continental breakfast was toast fruit or yogurt no sign of the croissants or pain or chocolat on menu.
Evening meal was delicious- high quailty food at reasonable prices.

Room Tip: Size and length of bed? The newer part of hotel is less dated.

Dear Pk M, thank you for your comments following your recent stay.
We'll certainly be taking everything on board, particularly regarding the issues in your bedroom/ bathroom. I am sorry if your stay was less than enjoyable as a result of this.

We decided to stay in Britain for our holiday this year so that we could take our dog. On Trip Advisor and Booking.com this hotel is advertised as being dog friendly. We also let the hotel know that our dog would be going at the time of booking. We stayed for 3 nights.

On arrival at the hotel we asked about dining for dinner. There is basically NO area of the hotel where you can eat a meal with your dog with you. Very annoying. I didnt get to eat my breakfast (that was included in our booking price) as we couldnt take our dog. We werent happy to leave him unattended in the room. The hotel has plenty of space. There should be an area for residents with dogs to sit, eat and relax. We were also given mixed messages about being able to take the dog outside so we could have a drink in the garden on the patio. We were told by one member of staff that we could walk him through the lounge. On another occasion a different member of staff said quite abruptly that dogs weren't allowed in the lounge as we walked through!
Throughout our stay we felt uncomfortable because we had our dog with us. We would not have booked to stay here if we had known that we would be treated like second class residents.

Please don't say that dogs are welcome if they are not.

We spent our money dining out in dog friendly bars and restaurants in St Andrews and Anstruther. Lovely places to visit. We also enjoyed walking our dog and having lunch at golf courses in and around St Andrews. The Dukes Course was particularly welcoming.

Other points about our stay...

The room was a good size.
The bed was comfortable, big and clean. The towels provided were great too.
But....
The bathroom was dated, dark and dingy. (Room 30).
There was an unpleasant smell in the bathroom too. Old shower curtain maybe?
Lots of scuff marks on walls and stains on the floor in the room.

We won't be returning.

Dear cat76713, thank you for taking the time to provide your comments following your recent stay at the Old Manor. I am disappointed to read your comments in particular relating to our dog policy, and how you feel you were treated by having a dog with you. However I wish to state that we are very much a “dog friendly” hotel - we have welcomed many guests over the years who are accompanied by their pets, and who return to the hotel on a regular basis because of our policy regarding pets.

Our policy states that dogs are welcome in (certain) guest bedrooms, and the front foyer/ lounge. For strict health and hygiene reasons, and out of consideration to our other guests, dogs are not permitted in the dining room and main lounge (where food is also served). This is not unreasonable, and we seldom receive negative comments to our policy from dog owners staying with us, who are happy to leave their dogs in the bedroom or car whilst dining.

We do have an outside seating area, where, in fair weather, we are happy to serve meals to guests with their dogs at any time of day. From your comments, it appears there were mixed messages regarding this, and I apologise accordingly – we will ensure that in future all members of staff are aware of not only our dog policy in general, and specifically, regarding how the outside area can be accessed.

Furthermore, I was also disappointed to read your comments as to how you felt overall during your stay, as a guest accompanied by your dog. All guests should receive the same warm welcome and friendly customer service throughout their stay, for which the hotel is renowned. I apologise if you felt this was not the case, and I can assure you this was not intentional.

Thank you again for your comments, and if I have failed to adequately address the matters you have referred to, then please do not hesitate to contact myself or our Operations Manager Morag Peattie at the hotel.

With kind regards,

Alistair Saddler

The rooms are nicely up-dated and views are impressive. There was a large balcony overlooking the golf course. The outside of the house needs some paint and rebuilt though. But the restaurant... what a disaster. it is a pity as the scenery was also nice and place ok, but in my case, almost everything went wrong.
First of all, the waiter tips off my wine glass, just after tasting and refilling. OK, these thing happend and luckily it was a white wine, so no disaster, but was unpleasent of course. But no compensation or new refill or anything was offered to compensate.
I ordered mussels, with garlic and parsley & jacket potatoes. What I received was mussles with leek! No garlic and a very small hint of parsley, just enough to mention that there was something green in it. But, leek is not the same as garlic! I was finishing my leek mussels and asked where were the jacket potatoes. They have forgotten and promised to bring me ones soonest. Some time after finishing mussels, I received small bucket of chips, not jacket potatoes.
SO, about everything went wrong at this service and have to say they really need to improve the restaurant to be on the same level with hotel offering.
Gordon, they would really need your help in this place, please...!
