Just returned from dreams Las Mareas
Had a terrific trip
the hotel is new and had some teething issues ,a pool was closed for a couple of days but was reopened crystal clear and hey there was many more pools to use that were clear.
The weather was Warm and very windy but they can't control the weather and we spent our days at the beach enjoying the beautiful view.
I read the reviews and worried about the trip but once we got there it was fantastic. Food was good the rooms were beautiful ,the staff was helpful and friendly.
We would go back , it was one of our best trips we enjoyed the area it was fresh and not overly commercialized.
Lots to see and do ,we zip lined ,rode Atv's, hiked , swam and bicycled.
To the staff thank you for making our vacation great.

PROS--new, beautiful hotel, great towels, cold AC, very polite staff, ceiling fans and coffeemaker in room, room service food, large bottle of shampoo, food, Ricozz (Randy) on the beach selling ATV tours--a great excursion, free phone calls to US from room.
CONS--awkward room layout (shower and toilet open up into the room), shower head (rain style) makes it seem like poor water pressure, more outlets needed, very few TV channels in English (not complaining, just preparing future guests), frequent electrical issues, wifi poor from the rooms (but good from the restaurant area).
TIPS TO MANAGEMENT TO MAKE IT BETTER--Be sure that the daily schedule is distributed nightly (for the next day) and post it around the property, be sure that someone answers the phone when calling from the room, clear up and clean the pools, be sure to make guests aware that long pants are required in Portofino, etc. (posting a sign would also be helpful), get better bicycles for the bicycle tour.
TIP FOR FUTURE GUESTS--It might be helpful to take two-way radios since phone service is spotty and/or expensive.
THIS IS A NEW PLACE AND WILL GET BETTER, BUT WE REALLY ENJOYED OUR STAY THERE. THE DRIVE FROM THE AIRPORT ISN'T THAT BAD (APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR ON PAVEMENT AND 1/2 HOUR ON GRAVEL).

I will not spend much time on what you have been reading from other reviews. Yes it is a 1 hour 45 min. ride and the last 20 km is a dirt road. Yes the hotel is nice and new. The food is good to better than good. Tthe bars are ok but you will have to go get your own drinks sometimes. Tthe staff is nice/friendly but overworked and not enough servers. Here are my issues.
This area is one of the top kite boarding spots in the world. The wind blows 15 to 25 mph. 24/7. The wind never stops from November to April (according to the kite boarding web site). When you ask a staf member about the wind you get answers that are all over the spectrum from they don't understand the question to they have been told to say "It is a tropical depression." The wind howels thru the door all night and at the pools you can't set your drink down or it will blow away. You can't use the paddle boards or the kiacks...too windy. You cant raise the pool umbrellas...too windy.
We were there from 1/6 to 1/11 with a group of swimming pool professional business owners, managers, etc. The lower pool was nasty, green, can't see the bottom. The other three pools were not as bad but still could not see the bottom. The pool deck is very slippery when wet. I saw 4 people go down hard with only minor injuries but we heard they had to fly someone back to the states the day we arrived for surgery and a pin in her ankle.
There were 200 plus people on the property that could have cleared these pools up in a couple of days but no one ever ask us what they may do to make them better. The day we left they roped off the bottom pool (the one and only swim up bar closed till ??? ). Lots of chiefs but no plan for the indians.
Bottom line is the place is nice and new but it is dangerous. Not enough signage at the pools, no stair rails on most of the many stairs, water clairity (or lack of) would have these pools closed in the states. Whoever wrote the specifications for the pool deck should be fired. At best they will limp along with a couple of twisted ankles a week, at worst they will loose a kid on the bottom of those murky pools. Where was the safety engineer then this place was designed and built. Pools are daangerous enough when built and managed correctly. This place is a disaster/death/tragedy waiting to happen.
And then there is the wind.

Room Tip: Get something on the ground floor. Too much walking, climbing, stairs, etc.

I'm so pleased that i did not read the reviews before we left. Our room was beautiful and well appointed. The location close to the beach was ideal for us. The beach was walkable and we were able to snorkel and kayak. The Japanese restaurant was excellent and the Italian restaurant was quite good as were the beachside seafood spots. Poolside service was excellent and the towels were plush and plentiful. My husband was able to take a 15-minute scuba lesson in the pool followed by a 30-minute dive from the beach. We thought the pools were beautiful and they were constantly cleaning the leaves.

This is a new property and the staff is not fully trained, so the delays that previous guests described over holiday periods are very understandable and frustrating. It appeared to be much easier to dine as we were a couple and there were large groups and families that required accomodation and were waiting. We tried the buffet one night and it was not good. The desserts were meager and the other offerings were not appetizing at all which was surprising. The coffee bar is very good and the gift shop is well stocked from aspirin to local art.

It was very, very, very windy. Truly howling wind at night and much of the day. The ride from the airport is 90-minutes. They are paving the last 30-minute stretch as we left which will cut down on the time. Almost all excursions leave at 7AM and spending 3+ hours in a vehicle to get anywhere is not appealing. We have been to Costa Rica previously, so we were not terribly disappointed, but it is a consideration especially for families.

Lastly, there were too many young, screaming children during our week, but we remained at the adult pool and were not impacted too much. Perhaps they should have adults only buildings.

Location is important. The standard rooms in and near the main building are much noisier. The swim out pool feauture is silly unless you have youngsters and then there is the constant worry of supervision. The jacuzzi on the balcony is an odd addition but some people thoroughly enjoyed it. The walk-in shower is enormous and the products are very nice. Beverages everywhere were plentiful and not run-of-the-mill all inclusive quality. We were among the few people at the gym everyday which had 4 treadmills with TVs, 2 bikes. an elliptical and more.

We have been to many properties all over the Caribbean and Central America and were prepared to have a wonderful time despite the typical shortcomings of all-inclusives. They do have a way to go in getting up to speed on many of the issues addressed by other guests. Wi-fi is spotty and our phones were dead. However, that did keep the constant yammering on phones around the pool to a minimum... a nice respite.

Room Tip: Second floor. Book a junior suite close to the beach.

I want to start by saying I am a very experienced traveller. Both business and personal. Most of the reviews here are accurate. The resort is lovely. Pools and bars for the most part .. No issues. I won't readdress what most have stated. Growing pains. Staff seem to be flying by seat of their pants. Customer experience suffers. We had major issue with the Italian Restaurant. We had a group of 13. Purposefully kept us out. Presented long and repeat delays even when we showed up early. Lied to. Kept us away from food and beverage manager. Impersonally escalated and spoke to operations manager. He took the time to meet with me personally, took notes .. And arranged for special meal and experience at the restaurant. Interestingly, the maître d actually served us that night. Perhaps as a result. Bottom line was they did make it right in the end. Thank you Jesus for taking cRe of us while we were there. I also want to specifically mention Hugo, a tour representative who you will find in the mornings upstairs beside coffee shop. He was wonderful! We arranged for 2 separate full days with him. He took us to some personal homes of Costa Rican villagers in addition to what we had booked..(we did jungle and Nicaragua tours). He was just terrific. Highly recommend him! Thank you Hugo!

Room Tip: Block a. Swim out nice.
