this is like your usual church with frescoes but on steroids. Not a bit of bare wall anywhere. It really is extraordinary and well worth a visit

The interior of this church is stunning with every inch covered in 16th century frescoes depicting biblical scenes and other stories. There is an unusual ' wheel of life ' fresco depicting the passage of a centenarian's life with its less than optimistic ending and the signs of the zodiac. Highly recommended.

We got an early bus (about 8.30 am) out of Veliko Tarnovo to Arbanasi and it was well worth it to wander around before the tour buses arrive. We pretty much had the place to ourselves and were free to wander into the churches without any crowds. That said the tour parties rush through so with a bit of patience you can have the place to yourself in a few minutes time.

Both the churches and the house museum in the village are included on a combination ticket available from the archeological museum in VT which also includes the Tsarevets fortress, the churches down by the river in Tarnovo and several museums in town. It lasts for 48 hours so plenty of time to do most of them.

The churches here are amazing and it pays just to sit and stare. The walls are covered in murals many of which have been re-plastered and painted over the centuries. Every square inch is painted and it is easy to pick out scenes from the Bible, the life of Christ and the Day of Judgement. They are some of the best murals in Bulgaria so it is worth coming here for a morning at least. Fabulous.

I have been in many churches, but nothing like this. Almost every inch is covered with paintings of religious figures, which I assume are saints as they have halos around their heads. Many are pictured as being in the process of being beheaded. I guess life was frequently shortened for some christians.
You gotta go see this.

Church of the Nativity is the oldest and the most richly decorated church in the village of Arbanasi, a must see while visiting the village and totally worth the 6 Lv. entrance fee. All walls and ceilings are covered by beautiful frescoes, icons and paintings; especially the Wheel of life is amazing!
