Beautiful baroque cathedral - both on the outside than on the inside, don't miss it. Surprising decoration on the inside.

Completed in 1776, the cathedral stands impressively at the top of a tall flight of steps and was built in the baroque style as part of the reconstruction of Noto after the 1693 earthquake.

The inside, unusually for cathedrals in Italy, has a consistency due to its having been built all at the one time on a new site. It is impressive but relatively simple, with bursts of baroque decoration in the paintings on the ceiling and dome and in some the sculptures and altarpieces.

Today the church also disolays modern crucifixes made, I think, from timbers from boats of immigrants.

Do not miss Ragusa on your list. I liked it more than Syracuse as things to visit in itself. Definitely worth a loom and we parked as per recommandationa from others on Trip advisor. It is nice because you can climb up from the parking on different routes and you do not get lost. The city has a specific charm in itself and seems better than Noto or Syracuse.

We nearly overlooked this cathedral until advised otherwise by a local. We were certainly happy to see the internal beauty of this cathedral.

In contrast to Chiesa San Domenico, the Basilica San Nicolo appears to have undergone extensive renovation so that it is in much better physical shape. It has beautiful frescoes and stained glass windows that are of later age than the church itself, including a stained glass window showing Mother Teresa.
