My fiance' and I, and my Italian father and his wife visited L' Antico Casale three times in the space of a week. This is how good the place is and shows how happy we were to just keep going back!
We'd come to Umbria to look at wedding venues, as my fiance' and I are getting married in the region next year. We were staying in a lovely B&B in Bosco, but when it came to evening food, the only option seemed to travel far or get to Perugia nearby, closer but not exactly a quick in-and-out option for us. So we looked in the area, sadly found a few disappointments but then came across L' Antico Casale.
We didn't know what to expect when we found it but booked there and then, and returned later on for our slot to be greeted by a really friendly and welcoming host. As it was still early, we had the restaurant all to ourselves and chose a corner at the top end but throughout the evening, we saw it getting busier and busier.
Despite this, service never faltered and staff never seemed (or at least never looked!) under pressure but then again, it seemed all well organised and relaxed. Our host never seemed to be without a smile anyway!
Food was something else altogether. It looked rustic and home-made but it was professionally presented and incredibly inviting. It's the kind of food that makes you look at it a couple of times to take it all in but doesn't intimidate you because it's genuine. It was flavoursome, heart-warming and generous but it wasn't stodgy. If there was only one minor issue with it, I would have said that some of the dishes were a little bit on the salty side.
I'd recommend L' Antico Casale to anyone. It is off the beaten track but it's so worth it. Before you know it, two or three hours have happily gone by, and you've eaten, drunk and been merry in such a charming restaurant that is suitable to all: couples, families, friends, etc.
