My partner and I came across the Trent Lock on our way through Sawley and were pleasantly surprised by how stunning the setting was on what was a gorgeous sunny evening! Unfortunately that’s as good as our visit got! We ordered drinks and made our way to a table out on the patio. It was here that we had to clear our own table as there were glasses and plates everywhere. We didn’t mind too much as the staff we saw looked rushed off their feet! We browsed the menu which looked very promising and detailed. We decided on the Wagyu burger and the Cajun pizza with some triple cooked chips. It took some time ordering at the bar as it was starting to get quite busy and the few staff they had on looked rushed off their feet! Once we managed to order the food we eagerly waited with another refreshment on the patio. The food finally arrived 40 minutes later and we were ravenous by this stage! This is where our disappointment really started. At £13.50, we expected the burger to be gourmet and packed with flavour! That it was not. Dry, over cooked and thrown on the plate. What a disapointment. The pizza didn’t do anything to improve our spirits either! My partner had to question where the toppings were on the pizza as it was so sparsely decorated with the expected ingredients. The poor waitress admitted herself that it was far from acceptable and offered us a refund or a replacement pizza. We decided to let the chef make up for it and requested a replacement. It was at this point we realised that we hadn’t even received the extra portion of triple cooked chips. We decided not to chase this up as we weren’t exactly blown away with the ones received with the burger. The replacement pizza arrived a short 10 minutes later and only added further disappointment to our visit. The middle of the pizza was not even cooked and when we turned the pizza over it became evident that it was almost just dough! We waited a short while for the waitress to reappear to let her know this but due to being so busy and understaffed, she never returned! We decided to end out misery of a visit and head for the car. The £26.50 paid for our food probably represented the worst value for money I have ever witnessed. Let’s hope the owners can take more pride going forwards in what is a lovely establishment.

Had a lovely meal out here in the evening the restaurant has a great atmosphere and the whole team were very friendly and accommodating with our requests. The food came out in good time and the portions were very satisfying I would definitely eat here again.

This was my second visit here by canal boat. First the good bits. It is a lovely location with a great beer garden. Inside is nicely done although on this occasion we were able to sit outside. This is an M&B managed house so don't expect a gastro experience but for standard vintage Inns menu the food was good. The beer was a massive disappointment. Only cask beer on was Doombar - not my favourite. There was a pump with Wainwrights on but despite the waitress saying she could pull a pint from it, it was clear that the barrel was empty. We asked her to get it changed only to be told that there was no one available to put a new barrel on as apparently only the manager can do that and he was not available. We were told we could have a pint the following day! Ridiculous! Changing a barrel is not rocket science and there is no reason why pretty much all the staff could not be trained and authorised to do it. There were two other pumps but they had no beer on them. What a farce. Also we were told we would have to go in the pub to order food as the waitresses would not take an order from outside. I can see that if the whole inside of the pub was full plus the garden then the staff would have struggled but the inside of the pub was virtually empty as it was such a lovely evening. Again a little annoying. Enjoyed my food - fish & chips - and the setting which came out as an average rating overall. Please M&B get your act together.

Dear Martin C,
I am sorry to hear you were disappointed coming to the Trent Lock.
Regards to our cask ales, if one goes during service we are unable to replace it with another straight away as our guest cask ale lines need cleaning every time they run out and we are unable to do this during service as it is a health and safety risk. We take pride in the great quality ales we serve and to do this we do standardly clean our lines when one runs out. I understand this has been frustrating.
We tell our waiters that we are unable to take orders outside as it is al fresco dining and we are unable to take any payments outside and unable to start tabs, so this is why we were unable to do this.
We are sorry you were left frustrated but we hope you come again

Been here a few times and always been ok, tonight will be the last time, cutlery was dirty asked waitress to change the knives which she did and these were no better , service was terrible and left the food , 40 minutes for 2 starters to come out is not good especially when not particularly busy, when main courses eventually came out after asking twice they were not great and left, told waitress she asked what was the matter with them took them and that was the last of the that, I had already paid up front, so will defiantly not reccomend this to any body ,have never left a bad review of anywhere so feel sad to have done this.

Dear Nora,
We are so sorry about what has happened on your visit.
We have had a team meeting recently to express the high standards myself and guests expect from the pub. Our kitchen staff are very new and have improved greatly since your visit with extra training and experience with the extremely busy days we have had.
We hope that you try us again to see the improvements.
Dan and the team
