This is a well situated hotel with pretty views to the front. The building has been renovated to a good standard, although our rooms were a little small. We certainly enjoyed the food, and found the majority of the staff welcoming and helpful. For us, everything was rather overshadowed by a conversation we had with the staff about a difficulty with internet access. This culminated in us being accused of "ignorance" by the man apparently trying to help us. Closing our bedroom door to end this conversation inflamed him further. I spoke to the manager, who turned out to be the daughter of the man involved (he also turns out be the owner). Unsurprisingly, that conversation didn't go very well, and ended with the owner calling after me and telling us to leave (safe in the knowledge that the whole area was sold out during the whiskey festival). All rather surreal! I'm guessing there will be a response to this post, which again won't be complementary about us.

The Murrays, Owner at Dowans Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 11 May 2022

Yes, you guessed correctly about there being a response. But only so the actual facts of the events can be noted. As my daughter explained to you when you came down seeking an e-mail address so that you could write a complaint, it was the aggressive and extremely rude behaviour of your husband when he had come down to reception (without you) to complain loudly about an internet issue in your bedroom that created the unfortunate situation in the first place. Before we even had been given the chance to resolve the issue (it was actually resolved by a simple reboot) he was demanding a room change and clearly had lost the ability to say the word "please". And yes, having had the door closed in my face I do not deny expressing my belief that a great deal of ignorance was being displayed by yourselves and nor do I deny offering you the option of leaving as all this nonsense happened shortly after you had arrived for what was to meant be a 4 day stay. And, quite frankly, the offer for you to leave without cost was a genuine one as we are vey clear that neither we nor our staff are here to experience inappropriate and unjustified rudeness. Although, to be fair, there were no further issues raised over the rest of your stay. It is also not surprising to see you express here that your conversation with my daughter did not go to your satisfaction simply because you were not willing to believe what she told you about the events in reception and nor did you receive the expected "grovelling apology". So, it was not a pleasant experience for either party but, thankfully, as the 4.5 out of 5 bubbles from 430 reviews indicates, it is not something that is experienced often.

Sadly due to covid we weren’t able to attend the whiskey festival afternoon tea .

For £70 this is what we were offered as a take away
(Two versions of this and a pot of syrup ! )

Some sort of whiskey decanted into a gin bottle - my friends into a vodka bottle - no idea what it was ?

And what on earth are the marshmallows about ???

Feeling completely robbed
Embarrassing - last time I hand over money to this hotel . Very disappointing

We loved our overnight visit at the Dowans Hotel in Aberlour. Wish it could have been longer than just one night. The 1888 vintage hotel was wonderfully renovated by the owners--a talented husband and wife team. The room was very nicely outfitted with a very modern bathroom. Great view of the glen from the top floor.

Our dinner was sea bass and prepared with gourmet talents. The bar/lounge was fun as Saturday night guests had their before-dinner drinks as their tables were being prepared.

The hidden gem was the whisky room, with at least 250 different labels of whisky available for sampling. So many whiskys, so little time...

Highly recommended!

Room tip: Our room overlooking the main road to the northwest was perfectly quiet.

A beautiful family-run boutique hotel that sets a lot of high benchmarks. We stayed for 2 nights as Aberlour is a great base to tour the areas Whisky distilleries and found this hotel was a real gem.

The hotel is perfectly situated on a hill overlooking the Spey valley and the town, both of which are within a short walking distance. It’s set back from the road, has plenty of parking for guests and is beautifully furnished in a modern style that is also in keeping with the age of the building. The beds were comfy, the bar very well stocked and the restaurant offered a delicious range of locally-sourced, hearty dishes.

What sets this hotel apart from most others is it’s hospitality. Lauren and Steph really made us feel at home, from top-notch cocktails and banter through to incredible breakfasts and help with our holiday plans. This hotel felt genuinely unique; we relaxed in luxurious surroundings, laughed and enjoyed the hospitality and in the end we didn’t want to leave.

Can’t recommend this place enough. We will certainly be back.

Room tip: Stay for dinner. The fare is excellent and well priced against the limited alternatives in Aberlour
