Hostal La Campana
Reviewed 30 October 2015

We booked a 2 night stay in this Hotel for the Saturday and Sunday night, but decided it would be better to drive up on the Friday to avoid the rush crossing the boarder for the event in Gibraltar.

We emailed and added an additional night to our Booking and arrived on the Friday.
On the Sunday whilst having breakfast in a nearby Cafe, my daughter rushed to find us to say we had to vacate our rooms by 11.00am. I said there must of been a mistake and returned to the Hostal immediately.

I was told that it was there mistake, but the people they had double booked to the room to were going to be staying 1 week and we only had one night left, so they chose to throw us out!

That meant after a late night at the Gibraltar Festival we were had to drive all the way home tired as there were no rooms available anywhere else.

Room Tip: Front Rooms extremely noisey! Double check your not double booked. They make mistakes and then blam...

Room has wifi, air con, TV, bath, shower, toilet & bidet. room cleaned thoroughly every day, changed bedding & bath towels everyday, staff friendly & helpful. A family style welcome on arrival and on departure. This was our 4th visit in in 4 years and will be back again next year with no hesitation, forget paying big money to stay in Gibraltar.

Room Tip: Just ask, nothing is too much trouble

Don't expect anything out of the ordinary. Very basic, as basic as it gets.
However the beds and bathroom were cleaned every day, and new towels were also provided on a daily basis. Aircon was ok (though it smelt foul sometimes), and TV was included.
Wifi worked intermittently.
With a little more effort from the administrators, this hostel could be much better.

Room Tip: all the same

Large, easy clean, room, with small bath, with fine view of local square,( and handy post giving date, time and temp.) #301. Staff were excellent, particularly when I fell ill, could not rate them highly enough. Less than 500m. from frontier and 20 from Hostel Carlos' restaurant with salad and steak, from example, with wine, for 9 euros! Supermarket less than 250m north. Aircon excellent, TV a bit small but who cares, only watched it a little. I would highly recommend this establishment for solo, or couples.

Room Tip: WiFi better reception.

Very basic lodging, with air conditioning, near the border with Gibraltar (walking distance). Wouldn't really call it a hostel, more like a very cheap hotel. Rooms have an adequate size, but the bathrooms were quite unclean, lots of hairs and dust in the bathroom floor. The rooms did not have a positive smell, although I can't say for sure if it was mold, smoke or some other smell. Pillows were uncomfortable.

The staff we saw consisted of a single old man which, in his own way, tried the best he could to seem helpful (didn't speak English and we had several misunderstandings). The wi-fi username and password must be requested at the reception, and an automatic receipt with the data will be printed for you. Not all smartphones will be happy with this kind of wifi login system.

The photos of the "restaurant" posted by the management do not correspond to what you'll see in the entrance. Currently it's just two or three small tables (without any tableware), and no one eats there, I don't even know if they actually work as restaurant since I never saw a single customer or occupied table.

The positive side of this "hostel" is the location. Besides being very close to the border with Gibraltar, it is also near the main streets in La Línea, meaning you'll have the best restaurants in the city within a 5-min walking distance (one more reason for the hostel's "restaurant" to be empty).

Although it wasn't a very positive experience (especially not for the price - 70 EUR a room), I think it may have been a good option, since we just used the place to sleep, and it was near all the important locations.
