So glad we decided to take the boat tour on the river to see the canyon and all of its inhabitants. It is beautiful. More beautiful than I anticipated. We simply arrived in Chiapa de Corzo via taxi from Tuxtla Gutierrez, and headed to the boat dock. There is a ticket booth for boat rides/tours where you can purchase your tickets for the 2-3 hour tour. We did not want to do a tour because we like to enjoy the surroundings and visit the city at our own pace -- and we are a bit adventurous, taking colectivos and combis for transportation. If you just want to see the canyon via boat and then leave, you will save time and a bit of money if you do take a tour from a tour company out of Tuxtla Gutierrez or San Cristobol de las Casas. On a portion of the boat ride on the river, yes, you will see trash on the water -- mainly plastics. This seems to put some people off. Frankly, it is an in your face reminder that we are all complicit in this waste, which causes irreparable harm to the ecosphere, biosphere, killing animals and plants daily. There is no "away" for plastic. Plastic waste will outlive all of us, sadly. Single use plastics are the main culprit. Reduce, reuse, repurpose. Don't let this keep you away. More people need to tell these stories so governments will do more to prevent these things from occuring. It won't ruin your trip, but it is sad to see. Imagine all we don't see, even in the areas where we live. Please don't forget to tip your boat driver. They work hard for your enjoyment. Also know that it may be unlikely to have an English speaking boat driver. If your Spanish speaking skills are good, you're golden. If not, read a bit of info anout the canyon and the river system before you go, so you have an idea what it is you are viewing. Enjoy!
