“Good hotel in a quiet end of Uganda”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

The staff was very friendly throughout our stay even though we had to scrounge around for the barman at first. This time I had a room overseeing the parking lot and pool rather than the mountain behind. Despite this the place was nice and quiet and I slept with open window (only the mozzy screen) and had some nice fresh air which is rare to come by in Kampala these days.

There was around 10 -15 other tenants in the hotel during the stay so it was very quiet. We got a good discount on the room which was a nice plus.

The restaurant served us some good steaks just about average for Uganda standards. Breakfast in the morning was nice with eggs cooked to order as I prefer to have them.

Ofcourse the creditcard machine was not working in the morning so cash was the only option.

Room Tip: The best rooms are surely the ones overseeing the mountains as it is a nice view in the sunrise.

Spent one night here on a stop-over in Mbale. The hotel was very simple and clean but seemed desolate and eerily quiet. We checked-in at about 12 pm but were told our rooms were not ready, even though it seemed as if we were the only guests there at the time. Staff seemed very idle but were helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden facing room.

I visit Protea Mbale very often and was last there during the Easter Holidays. We sat in the bar at the the main building. We ordered a glass of wine but we were told there was no such wine in stock,so we were "forced" to buy a whole bottle at 60,000/=. My query why does the Protea Hotel Mbale - of a 3 star stature not have options like a glass of wine? That is for any body who simply wishes to drink a small quantity. Why does Protea Mbale have to compel a guest to buy a whole bottle of wine simply because the management did not stock the wine to measure by glass? Is that a fault of the guests?

Secondly, the waiters at the bar are not friendly at all and i never so any of them smile. I am sure they need a lot of training.

Thirdly, after getting served, our table was dirty with water that was dripping of the beer bottles and the bottle of mineral water. My sister did not accurately pour her tea in the cup, some milk poured on the table. But all this was not cleaned of the table. The waiter who kept moving around us could clean until we called him to do so when ordering for an extra cookie.

The waiting staff are so dull and lifeless, regrettably. All that points to lack of training of staff. The Food & Beverage department has a great weakness.

Otherwise, Protea Mbale Hotel is worth visiting. The beauty of the lush gardens is second to none in Mbale.

The river that runs across the compound is natural and wonderful, again second to none in the region.

it was just unbelievable with the care i received. all the hill views tell the secrets of its location, allover the area is covered with cool breezes, the local community is just having a plenty of smiles to you, Although off the beaten silence, this hotel is a great place to stay with a decent restaurant, bar, air conditioning and very helpful front office and staff. The restaurant staff seemed a little bemused when i moved a table and chairs for my parting culture onto the balcony to enjoy an alfresco breakfast but by time i thought of it twice, they'd actually done it for me! on the Sad note i didn't get time to use the pool but it all looked great. Reliable WI-fi in the rooms

Room Tip: if you enjoy sun bathing, rooms on the west are the best, but if you enjoy sun rise then turn for th...

This is the best and most attractive hotel facility in Eastern Uganda. Having done my internship there ( while it was still under the name of Mbale Resort Hotel), the place had beautiful serenity and state of the art facilities. The staff were warm and friendly, the chirping birds in the night, the sound of the waterflow from the crossing 'river' and the beautiful scenes of Mt. Elgon slopes and Sipi Falls........Oh! Such a perfect place to visit.
