It was wonderful to finally see these amazing penguins with my own eyes. Very well run, great set up.

We upgraded to the Guided Ranger tour, which was very good. Along with the information she shared about the penguins, she supplied us with headphones to hear her, seat cushions for the concrete benches, binoculars, and a great location from which to view the penguins. It was well worth the extra cost. There are only very limited spaces available, so plan ahead. NO PHOTOGRAPHS are permitted, so don't bother to bring a camera (unless you want a picture of a taxidermied penguin after the tour.) It can get very cold as the sun goes down, so bring extra layers.

The Penguin Parade is a great experience that is worth the time and expense. No photography is allowed so it forces you to enjoy the moment. They monitor everyone very closely so leave your phone/camera in your car. Pay for the plus experience, it’s worth the extra $$.

Watched the penguin parade in the underground viewing area, and was really amazed watching the little penguins at such close distance, and at eye level. It was one of those moving moments where you realized how much we needed to appreciate the beauty of nature.

One BIG downside of the experience, however, was that there were a lot of kids shouting and babies screaming in the viewing area (and the parents didn't even bother to try to calm them down). According to the ranger, the little penguins could hear us so I don't think it's good for them to have so much noise around. And it's also a huge annoyance to other visitors who would like to enjoy the experience in peace.

Watching the little penguins emerge from the ocean at night and scamper across the beach is a nice way to engage a little with the wildlife on this beautiful island.

Best advice, rug up and depending where you are sitting a small waterproof padded mat with dramatically improve your experience. Seems no matter what time of year you visit be prepared for a very cold evening. And the bench seating can be cold wet and hard.

Get there early for good seating but be prepare for big groups of foreign tourists to squeeze right in and all over your personal space if you are toward the front.

A good experience for the kids nonetheless.
