Any temples always have good view in daytime. But only few temples that will show you their stunning and magical night view, - and Penataran Temple is one in the list. Twice a year, the local art culture association held Fullmoon festival, celebrated with traditional art dance and song. I have been in many fullmoon festival around Indonesia and nothing can compare with Penataran Fullmoon Festival. It's magical and more than worth to see!
Ticket only IDR 10K for local and international tourist - and its donated to the art culture association. Check their website and facebook page: Purnama Seruling Penataran for the next schedule. You won't miss it!

If you're into history, you can't miss this temple when you're visiting East Java Province. It was the third biggest ancient temple in Indonesia, built in the 11th century, started by the Kingdom of Kediri, later continued by Singhasari and Majapahit Kingdom in order to worship the God of Palah, the ruler of Mount Kelud. The origin name of the temple itself is "Palah Temple" and later named "Penataran Temple" because of the village where the temple situated.

It's a beautiful temple and there are many aspects to explore but I suggest you pay attention to the reliefs on the second level of "Mother Temple (the biggest building in the area)" which is depicted some figures who's dressing like Mayan tribe of America. This relief open a new theory for some archeologist that the ancestors of the Indonesia might have been sailing to the American continent. The reliefs is on the right side of the second level, just after you finish ascending the steps.

It is 11 km north from the Tomb of Sukarno (1st President of Indonesia) and take 30 minutes, more less. If you drive car then it's okay because it's pretty easy to reach the temple since the road is in good shape. But if you don't have any vehicle, better to look some car or scooter rental because there is no public transportation to take you there.

The good time to visit the temple is before 09.00 am or after 03.00 pm. But the best time is around 04.00 pm because the light from the sun will create more dramatic photos of the temple. Also you can see the beautiful crimson sunset, if the sky is clear.

If you come when the Purnama Seruling Penataran or the Fullmoon Flute Festival held, you're lucky! It's a cultural festival organized by the Blitar Art Council where the local artists collaborate with the international artists to achieve the world of peace.
