This is a great lodge with spacious cabanas and welcoming hosts. There are several little spots to sit down and relax, all of them with a roof as it rains pretty often. But hey, how else will the beautiful jungle surrounding the lodge stay green?

We went on a cayman tour with a tour guide arranged via the lodge. It was raining throughout the tour which was in itself not a problem as the lodge provided really good ponchos, but it turned out caymans avoid the rain as well and stay under water then. So we couldn't catch any caimams. We found it a pity the hosts didn't tell us beforehand and we basically spend 2 hours on a boat (in the rain) not doing much and paying 50 dollars for it.

Also the food portions were rather small... Being outdoors makes people hungry!

But the atmosphere at Sabalos is really nice and they have the cutest dog named Pinto!

Room Tip: Ask for a cabana with river view

Hello Tessa.
Thanks for your nice comment of the lodge.
All the tours offered by Sabalos Lodge, are develop by communitarian, this way we provide the local people the opportunity to do alternative job instead of impact the fragile forest. Sometime the weather conditions could affect some activities.
Regards
Rafael

The beauty of the location is a difficult think to put into words. From the wildlife along the river to the incredibly friendly, genuine and hard working staff I recommend this location to anyone looking for unique trip. Don't miss out!

The food is almost too good. I ate and ate.

Our stay (2 female friends traveling Nicaragua) was amazing. Stayed at the Tarzan cabin, recommended, with great view on the river. The staff is very kind and friendly and they do everything to make you feel at home. They give you much useful information about tours, transport and the area. The tours were well arranged, friendly English speaking guides, they really show you things you wouldn't spot by yourself.
El Castillo is a nice cute little town which is easy to visit by a 30min boat ride.
We believe this area and the lodge should be on your itinerary when traveling the beautiful country!

Hello Eva.
Thanks for your words. An important to know, all the activities are develop by communitarian that get involved in tourist, and the communitarian now protect the environment instead of destroy it.

A own little house on poals on the historic river Rio Son Juan. Very romantic, quiet and peaceful place to spend some nights.
Sleeping under the stars, waking up by howlermonkies and bird sounds, its just what you expect (and more) from a cabin at this very special location. The staff is very helpful and there are many activities to do. We did some kayakking, hiking and especialy the kaaymantour at night was remarkable (and English speeking, ask for Gulio hè is really funny and good at his work). Why not 5 stars? They could improve in food (bit expensive and not much variéty, breakfast could be a bit more) and also recommend the hotel to add some candle light to make the experience to a 5 star.

Hello Robert.
I’m glad you like your visit in Sabalos Lodge.
We will arrange for a larger portion of the meals thanks for let me know.
In the pass we use kerosene to light the internal trails, but the excessive rain of the rain forest always disturb the kerosene lights, then we exchange for electrical ones that keep working better.

Well worth a visit! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sabalos Lodge (although 1 night was not enough). The open air cabina's over looking the Rio San Juan are amazing. Great place for relaxing in a hammock, watching wildlife and arranging various excursions into the jungle. There aren't really any local amenities, but that's what we liked about it - you really are out in the jungle. The closest amenities can be found out at Sabalos which is about a half hour walk away, or a short boat ride.

The food offered on site was great - we particularly enjoyed the pancakes and fresh fruit juice for breakfast. The staff were friendly, very accommodating and speak English.

It should be said that at the moment the ferry from Omotepe or Granada to San Carlos is no longer operating (apparently the water level in the lake is too low) which can make make getting to the Rio San Juan area a little tricky. However, the staff were very helpful in arranging transportation to Granada.
