“Avoid Room 99 at all cost”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 December 2011

I have stayed at this hotel on a craft weekend for the last four years. It's in a lovely position high on a hill, but some of the rooms are badly in need of updating. This year I was in Room 99. AAaaarrgh. It's what I affectionately called 'The Cave'. There is a wall around 3ft from the window, so no light in the room. It is also behind the swimming pool complex so it is noisy from 10pm to morning when they do the leisure area cleaning. There is the sound of a generator/pump all day and all night and after 10pm the sound of a weird tapping noise (sounds like someone in the room above jumping on the bed!!). I spent two sleepless nights in there and having paid a supplement for single occupancy I wasn't impressed by the managements help, or lack of. Basically the manager tried to fob me off with 'problems with the chlorin levels - it won't last long' and various other excuses. Why wasn't he just up front and explain the problem. This room should never be let to paying guests!!!

I complained to Best Western who basically said it's not our problem we don't own the hotel and passed it on to the person I was complaining about, said manager. Some of the reception staff are lovely and helpful, others not so. Don't mention mobile phone signals (you won't get one in Room 99) because you'll get a lecture from the receptionist who 'knows a lot about mobiles' to quote her.

I won't be returning to this hotel. Not because it's a dreadful place, but because there is a lack of customer care on the part of management. If I pay to stay in a hotel I expect respect and not lies.

Room Tip: Room 217 is a suite with a jacuzzi bath - lovely.

Food in the cafe overlooking the swimming pool was not good. Scampi was under cooked. Very slow service. Not a cosy room!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view!

I stayed here recently with my husband, sister and brother in law. My sister bought this on a KGB deal. The room we had was a little like a 70's throwback, but the hotel does appear to be updating the rooms and having said this the room was warm and the bed comfortable. We had no view as we were at the back of the hotel, so cannot comment on the views in the rooms but the there is a nice view in the restaurant if you get a table by the window. We arrived on 11/11/2011 and the hotel was doing an £11 three course meal and £11 bottle of wine, so we booked. The food was good, especially the lamb. Breakfast was very good. The staff where very helpful and friendly. The swimming pool area was one of the nicest I have been in at a hotel, I especially liked the low lighting (we swam in the evening), very relaxing. The only thing I noticed when dining was that the waitresses uniform had seen better days, the blouses where far from pristine and the girls needed to put their hair up as they looked very untidy. All in all we had a lovely two nights here and I would recommend it.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the hotel, possibly because we had booked on a cheap deal. This room ha...

This is one of their modern, purpose-built hotels, rather than a converted country house. The staff were cheerful and helpful. The room was spacious, clean and warm, and the bed was comfortable. The menu in the restaurant was fairly limited, but there were no problems with the quality. It will be my hotel of choice the next time I am in the vicinity.
