Beautiful resort, great people, excellent service

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Oct 2011
We stayed for 4 days at this lovely resort. The service was excellent. I only have a few complaints, you only got 2 free liters of water per day. After that, they charged an unreasonable 30 baht per bottle. At the very least, water should be included with the room and dinners. Prices at the resort were more along western rates, while not unreasonable, are slightly above what they should be charging for this part of the world. The food was excellent at the restaurant, the rooms were spotless and the people at the resort went out of their way to make us feel like family. My only complaint with the staff is they didn't have anyone with excellent english skills.

Koh Yao Yai is quite a nice getaway a short boat ride away from Phuket. When we arrived at the island pier despite providing the resort prior notice during the reservation no one was there for the transfer to the resort. When we walked further, we saw a pick-up truck bearing the resort's name with luggages in the rear cabin. It appears that the shuttle has already left and so we had to go with them.
When we got to reception to check in, they told us our bungalow wasn't ready even though we arrived a little past 2 PM. We made our way to the pool area and relaxed with some drinks.
We were able to check in at 4 PM and looking at the lay out of the bungalows, they were really private. The bungalows are set among trees and spaced quite apart from each other, feels like we were in a little jungle.
Our bungalow was spacious, with an outdoor terrace where there are sun loungers, a daybed and the refrigerator. The placement of the refrigerator baffled us a little as we had to go out of the room/bungalow every time we want a cold drink etc.
The bed was big and a little on the hard side but it was still comfortable. The bungalow had a huge window looking out into the "jungle" and the resort main path.
The bungalow had an outdoor rainshower, it lacked traditional or ethnic touches but it had some lovely smelling shower gel.
The infinity pool is gorgeous overlooking another island across from Yao Yai.
The beach in front of the hotel wasn't good for swimming as you had to walk a long way out to reach the water.
We stayed for 3 nights and ate all of our meals at the in-house restaurant. We found the selection acceptable and prices are comparable if not just a little higher than Phuket.
Our flight out of Phuket was at 7 PM and even though we had to check out at 12, we were welcome to use the resort facilities until we left at 4 PM (last speedboat out to Phuket).
The staff at reception and housekeeping were very friendly and helpful but the staff at the restaurant and bar not quite so. We had to seek them out every time we wanted to order drinks or snacks by the pool or when we sat down lunch and dinner.

Room tip: a bungalow at the end of the resort path is quiet and more private

Koh Yao Yai Village is a really nice resort with very nice facilities. The bungalows are first class with nice interior, a big porch and an outdoor shower. It's a good idea to take a shower during the early evening before the mosquitos arrives :)

Unfortunately we were anyway disappointed with our stay here.
It all atarted when we arrived to the resort and they told us that they didn't recommend us using the beach since there were a lot of big rocks in the water. They arranged shuttle service to another beach on the island but of course we wanted to be able to use the beach at the hotel. The pool was awesome but you don't go to Thailand to swim in a pool...

One other negative thing is that there really nothing to do on the island. I would say that it's at least 5 kilometers to the nearest mini-market and that was actually the only mini.market I saw.

The third negative aspect is that the food and excursions are at least twice the price compared to the rest of Thailand (Phuket, Koh Lanta etc.)
We used laundry service during our vacation i Thailand but at this resort it was more expensive to wash one shirt than it was to wash 2 kg of laundry on other locations!

Koh Yao Yai Village is a place you should visit if you just want to relax and you don't mind spending extra money on food and excursions.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was very relaxing as the Island is very quiet. However for us, 2 nights was more than enough as there is not a lot to do here unless you want to pay high rates for hotel activities. We couldn't find many restaurants on the Island to eat at so we were forced to eat at the hotel's restaurant. The food is reasonably priced and the quality is pretty good. In my opinion the western dishes were actually better than the thai dishes. The restaurant itself is very nice. It's an open bungalow overlooking the beautiful infinity pool and coastline. The only issue we had with the restaurant was the menu and breakfast was somewhat limited and got very boring after a couple of lunches and dinners.

The bungalow room was comfortable and clean and surrounded by beautiful forest scenery. We loved the covered balcony and the open rain shower which is apart of the bathroom. Yes there are bugs which get into the room but this is to be expected in this particular environment but they never annoyed us and we didn't get bittern by mosquitos any more than we did at any of the resorts on the mainland.

We organised our own transfers to the Island which was very easy. Once we arrived at the Island, the Resort shuttle service was there already waiting for other guests so we were able to get a ride back to the resort with them. Otherwise I think it would have been easy to organise transport from the pier to the resort with a local.

Overall, we loved the personal touches which this resort provides and the tranquil, beautiful location and excellent value for money.

Overall, Koh Yao Yai Village was a great peaceful getaway. Not quite the beach holiday i had hoped for because of the heavy downpour during late August (Don't try your luck during the monsoon season). All tours take place on other islands/beaches and unfortunately we couldn't go on any because of the rain. So was confined to the resort's library (which shelves plenty of books) + one restaurant (recommend the massaman curry) the entire duration of the trip but it was relaxing nonetheless. A great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city with very warm, welcoming staff. On the last day the sun came out and the infinity pool that overlooks the beach was stunning - definitely the highlight of the resort. The beach on the other hand is disappointing, not one for the postcards or for swimming purposes. The resort is massive and expanding - which also meant construction work (noisy). We booked a seaview villa and it was more murky lagoon view NOT seaview. So that was a bit of a disappointment but the inside was very spacious with a nice outdoor shower. However don't be expecting a 5 star resort - the partitions didn't shut properly and the floor was rather oily?? Powercuts during storms. But they do treat you well - with daily room cleaning + transportation to the restaurant/lobby via golf cart if you so desired.

2 things I wish I had known before going:
(1) Travel from Phuket-Koh Yao Yai and NOT from Krabi-Koh Yao Yai. The travel from Krabi airport took us a good 4 hours+, consisting of car-speed boat-tuk tuk-longtail boat-tuk tuk. Exhausting. But journey to Phuket was MUCH shorter (tuk tuk-speedboat-car)
(2) Beach is not breathtaking. Koh Yao Yai is unfortunately not known for its pristine beaches. (The infinity pool however IS breathtaking)

Would i be returning? Probably not in the near future. Was a great holiday but think I'll try staying at Koh Phi Phi itself for the picturesque beaches next time

Room tip: Seaview room (not 706 as it called itself seaview but faced a murky lagoon)

Hi all.
Having glanced over the previous reviews, read on only if you have your head screwed on well, are not so snobbish as to complain about wildlife and the colour of travel, and simply, know when you are a lucky person.
This resort is a delight. Yes it's Eco, yes there are bugs, but by 'eck some folk find fault where sometimes the best ain't good enough.
The resort is lovely. The staff, again are the happiest, and the the pool, the views, the atmosphere are just indescribeable. We visited very late august and we had the resort to ourselves. The infinity pool is enormous and empty bar you, with the limestone kharsts in the distance, cicadas chirping, and the
palms rustling. It is just terrific and. it is just testament to the fact

some moan about anything that someone complains about trivial stuff. Get a frikin grip. This place is divine, and just go before tourism
catches up. I have but one tip. If you like a beer, buy enough for your stay on the mainland at a 7,11 as the island is staunchly Muslim and as such beer is 5 times as expensive. Bar that,
