Pretty hotel but lacking in service and DONT take the transfer there!

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 22 Dec 2011
My friend and I went for 3 days. The place is beautiful. However we booked a transfer from Phuket and they contacted us the night before saying they would pick us up at 9:15 rather than 10:15. The next day we woke up early but they didnt show up till after 10! Then they put us on a public ferry, not their private boat so we were sitting in the rain and wind. Worst, they forgot to pick us up at the Pier! thank goodness my friend had her phone so we called them and it took them an hour before they picked us up AND one of our bags was not with the others on the ferry so it got left behind.

We were upset when we arrived but the staff dont speak english well and didnt understand why we were upset (though they did understand about our bag and we got it back). I asked to see the manager but he was too busy to see us as he was "having lunch"! Well how nice for him. I actually had to email theyre info address to explain that we did not feel we should pay for the transfer. Later that night the manager apologized and the next day ey made us sign some form saying we wouldnt hold it againt them and that the transfer was free. people kept apologizing " for what happened" everywhere we went, which was awkward.

When we checked out, they erroneously added $1000 baht to our bill for scooters we never rented and tried to charge us for things we didnt take from the mini bar!

In summary, if there is another resort on the island you can experience the beauty without the hassle. but the resort itself is beautiful, so just get there yourself and double check the bill when you leave!

Decided to treat my brother to a few days away from Hong Kong on his trip to Asia this year. Upon arrival in Phuket, we stayed in another hotel near to the airport as we arrived very late. We were picked up by the resort staff, and taken to the boat pier and taken to the island (away from all the noise of Phuket), where we were greated by the very friendly staff at the resort who came to collect us. When we arrived at the resort, we were delighted to find very beautiful rooms and facilities amongst the untampered local island life.
The villas are beautiful - very 'basic' but clean, with an outdoor shower which was amazing. The large porch has a great seating area and mosquito nets around a comfy sofa for the evening. The villas also come with their own sun loungers too, and feel very secluded and private as they are all set apart with trees.
Although the beach at the resort is not great, the pool is fantastic. When we travelled here, the resort only had a few other people staying, so we pretty much had the pool to ourselves. The beach was great for walks, but didn't mind not swimming in it since the infinity pool was just amazing! The restaurant offers some lovely food, however after our 3 nights eating lunch and evenings, it was a bit repetitive and we felt the menu was a little restrictive - there weren't any other options we were aware of. The breakfasts were very good - good selection and high quality.
I also got a massage in the spa room - very good, and reasonably priced.
The resort offered some fantastic day-trips; we did the Phang-Nga bay tour (including James Bond Island - a bit of a letdown if you are a Bond fan like me!) and the island cycling tour. Our guide for both of these trips was great fun, and showed us more than your typical tour would. We travelled by traditional thai boat, so all of the tourists from Phuket took our photos in the boat as they were on more modern vessels! This was great fun. JB island is very touristy, so be prepared for a mass of tourists there - rather disappointing but the rest of the day, and the food, was fantastic.
Although i travelled with my brother, I feel this resort is more suited to couples. It was quite 'expensive' in terms of Thai prices, but for a nice treat away from the typical Phuket holiday, it was well worth the money. On the whole, a great few days away.

We stayed for 4 days at this lovely resort. The service was excellent. I only have a few complaints, you only got 2 free liters of water per day. After that, they charged an unreasonable 30 baht per bottle. At the very least, water should be included with the room and dinners. Prices at the resort were more along western rates, while not unreasonable, are slightly above what they should be charging for this part of the world. The food was excellent at the restaurant, the rooms were spotless and the people at the resort went out of their way to make us feel like family. My only complaint with the staff is they didn't have anyone with excellent english skills.

Koh Yao Yai is quite a nice getaway a short boat ride away from Phuket. When we arrived at the island pier despite providing the resort prior notice during the reservation no one was there for the transfer to the resort. When we walked further, we saw a pick-up truck bearing the resort's name with luggages in the rear cabin. It appears that the shuttle has already left and so we had to go with them.
When we got to reception to check in, they told us our bungalow wasn't ready even though we arrived a little past 2 PM. We made our way to the pool area and relaxed with some drinks.
We were able to check in at 4 PM and looking at the lay out of the bungalows, they were really private. The bungalows are set among trees and spaced quite apart from each other, feels like we were in a little jungle.
Our bungalow was spacious, with an outdoor terrace where there are sun loungers, a daybed and the refrigerator. The placement of the refrigerator baffled us a little as we had to go out of the room/bungalow every time we want a cold drink etc.
The bed was big and a little on the hard side but it was still comfortable. The bungalow had a huge window looking out into the "jungle" and the resort main path.
The bungalow had an outdoor rainshower, it lacked traditional or ethnic touches but it had some lovely smelling shower gel.
The infinity pool is gorgeous overlooking another island across from Yao Yai.
The beach in front of the hotel wasn't good for swimming as you had to walk a long way out to reach the water.
We stayed for 3 nights and ate all of our meals at the in-house restaurant. We found the selection acceptable and prices are comparable if not just a little higher than Phuket.
Our flight out of Phuket was at 7 PM and even though we had to check out at 12, we were welcome to use the resort facilities until we left at 4 PM (last speedboat out to Phuket).
The staff at reception and housekeeping were very friendly and helpful but the staff at the restaurant and bar not quite so. We had to seek them out every time we wanted to order drinks or snacks by the pool or when we sat down lunch and dinner.

Room tip: a bungalow at the end of the resort path is quiet and more private

Koh Yao Yai Village is a really nice resort with very nice facilities. The bungalows are first class with nice interior, a big porch and an outdoor shower. It's a good idea to take a shower during the early evening before the mosquitos arrives :)

Unfortunately we were anyway disappointed with our stay here.
It all atarted when we arrived to the resort and they told us that they didn't recommend us using the beach since there were a lot of big rocks in the water. They arranged shuttle service to another beach on the island but of course we wanted to be able to use the beach at the hotel. The pool was awesome but you don't go to Thailand to swim in a pool...

One other negative thing is that there really nothing to do on the island. I would say that it's at least 5 kilometers to the nearest mini-market and that was actually the only mini.market I saw.

The third negative aspect is that the food and excursions are at least twice the price compared to the rest of Thailand (Phuket, Koh Lanta etc.)
We used laundry service during our vacation i Thailand but at this resort it was more expensive to wash one shirt than it was to wash 2 kg of laundry on other locations!

Koh Yao Yai Village is a place you should visit if you just want to relax and you don't mind spending extra money on food and excursions.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was very relaxing as the Island is very quiet. However for us, 2 nights was more than enough as there is not a lot to do here unless you want to pay high rates for hotel activities. We couldn't find many restaurants on the Island to eat at so we were forced to eat at the hotel's restaurant. The food is reasonably priced and the quality is pretty good. In my opinion the western dishes were actually better than the thai dishes. The restaurant itself is very nice. It's an open bungalow overlooking the beautiful infinity pool and coastline. The only issue we had with the restaurant was the menu and breakfast was somewhat limited and got very boring after a couple of lunches and dinners.

The bungalow room was comfortable and clean and surrounded by beautiful forest scenery. We loved the covered balcony and the open rain shower which is apart of the bathroom. Yes there are bugs which get into the room but this is to be expected in this particular environment but they never annoyed us and we didn't get bittern by mosquitos any more than we did at any of the resorts on the mainland.

We organised our own transfers to the Island which was very easy. Once we arrived at the Island, the Resort shuttle service was there already waiting for other guests so we were able to get a ride back to the resort with them. Otherwise I think it would have been easy to organise transport from the pier to the resort with a local.

Overall, we loved the personal touches which this resort provides and the tranquil, beautiful location and excellent value for money.
