This hotel has one of the best swimming pools I've ever been to. The service is wonderful throughout the hotel and the food is very decent with some good options.
The hotel is on top of a hill - which is not bad. But, there is a nightclub in town that blasts its music until 4AM. Don't expect to sleep Friday and Saturday nights. Sunday had some left over partying but that finished at around midnight. They told us at the hotel that they have tried talking to the mayor's office but since there are no sound ordinance anywhere in Colombia, it's been tough love. Unfortunately, one might say that during the week you can enjoy the hotel but it is also hit and miss. The last time we were there, a company party was going on and the pool was being used as a Zumba platform. The hotel hosts conferences and other events during the week.
The hotel is old - which is also not bad because it looks beautiful from the outside. However, that means that everything inside is also old. Bed, fixtures and infrastructure have not been updated in more than 20 years minimum. We arrived on a Saturday expecting the noise. However, the bed was extremely uncomfortable with a dip in the center. The pillows seemed like plastic bags filled with newspaper. The two blankets were thinner than rice paper. I thought I'd get rest Sunday night, but in the middle of the night it sounded like there was an alligator in the plumbing. No sleep the second night either. Granted we were in an upgraded room (Altillo). The tile on the floors look very dirty, and the windows do not close all the way. We were contemplating staying one more night...even if it was just to be at the pool. However, we were told that Monday a filming crew was arriving and that they didn't make "that much noise." We high-tailed out of there. I think this part is the worst part of the hotel. It's fine that they cannot control the exterior problems with the hotel. But buying new beds, sheets, pillows and fixing plumbing is something that should not be put on hold for 20+ years.
We ran to the Hotel Union which we never stayed at but we did not have much of a choice as we did not want to drive back to Bogotá. Maybe it was that I had not slept in two days, but the rooms, bed and bathroom were magnificent. The only thing I heard at night were angles playing their harps <--- Just kidding, but it did feel this way.
We would stay at Hotel Tocarema quite often in the last 10 years. However, I will never go back again until the fix the "Ugly" part of the hotel which is simple maintenance.
