Very comfortable with a warm welcome

Review of The Poppy House
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Oct 2020
My wife and I had a 4-night stay at the Poppy House and it was good to return to a warm and comfortable room after a day's walking in the local countryside, especially the day we got very wet and cold. A nice touch is a large tray next to a radiator where you can dry your walking boots. There is good food and beer close by at the Three Tuns, or a little further at the Six Bells.
Date of stay: October 2020
Room Tip: We were very happy with Room 1

This is a very nice old building, mainly 16th century so lots of wooden beams. Nice room with comfortable bed and a good veggie breakfast. Good value too at £50. Bishops Castle is a very olde English town with some arty characteristics.

We were half expecting to be told we were too late for lunch, and turned away. But what a delight! We were very warmly welcomed, and served a delicious spinach soup accompanied by generous sandwiches on tasty granary bread. The Poppy House had a homely feel but was entirely professional.

Room tip: We only had lunch.

My wife and I stayed at the Poppy House for one night and can't recommend the place high enough. From letting us into our room early to letting us park our car at the back of the property owners Clive and Julie couldn't do enough to make sure our stay was enjoyable.

Room was clean and large, shower was powerful and everything we needed was in the room - toiletries, tea/coffee, mini fridge etc etc.

Breakfast was really nice with lots of choice. And I feel like I should add that everything has been done to make the B&B safe and Covid secure. The whole building was very clean and extra measures were in place to make guests feel safe. The owners also run the Poppy House Tearooms next door to the B&B but sadly it is closed on Tuesdays when we stayed otherwise we would've definitely visited.

All in all The Poppy House is a wonderful place to stay and if you're in Bishop's Castle for a break I can't recommend it enough.

We had a wonderful stay in Room 3 of the Poppy House. Our hosts were friendly and welcoming and the cooked breakfasts were delicious and generous (full of good quality local produce). We loved our room which was large, light, and overlooked the main shopping area of Bishops Castle. The window seat was a great spot for a glass of wine.

We took advantage of the midweek deal on the Poppy House website but it would have been great value even without the free extra nights stay.

Thank you to everyone at the Poppy House we had a a great stay!

My sister and I booked rooms for a two night stay. We arrived late and were welcomed in on a cold and dark night. Our rooms were cosy, well presented and toasty warm.
Both had all needs, en-suite, tea, coffee facilities, mini fridge, fluffy towels and toiletries.
TV was easy to navigate, sky wifi, hot shower. They kept the heating on so we were really warm all the time. Weather was awful outside so it was wonderful to feel tucked up.
Because the building is steeped in history, it has the most beautiful beams and original look. Decor was lovely and the bed was feather tastic!!
The room was naturally crooked with age. So beautiful.
The only slight downside was the level of noise above as it’s such an old building, you hear anyone above as if they are in the room with you. Luckily for me, I was only woken at 7.30 am with that noise but it was outweighed by all the other lovely aspects so who cares.
Breakfast was wonderful. The staff so helpful, friendly and personal to our requests. My feeling I left with was that we were welcome back anytime which is a lovely memory to have, for such a friendly run business to give naturally. Thankyou to all staff for making our stay so happy.
