Took a bit of effort to get a taxi out to CatBa Eco Lodge...expect to pay extra as it is out of the way. The Lodge itself is great...people are friendly and welcoming..even with a slight language differential. The owner gave me the same exchange rate as the banks in Hanoi so that was helpful. The food is excellent and you always have a place set for you at the table even if you don't show. The only thing I had difficulty with was the heat..it was 45C...and the only activity you want to do is lie in the hammock and drink cold beer..rough. The rooms are comfortable but have absolutely no soundproofing..so if your neighbor needs to wake at 6am...you WILL wake at 6am and not sleep again until they leave. You can rent motorbikes from the hotel.

Room tip: Get a room without a neighbour. The guest house up the hill slightly seems a little quieter. My room had a/c.

We were due to stay here over the holiday weekend in Hanoi, naturally the whole of Cat Ba island was extremely busy. Therefore we booked days in advance. When we arrived to the Ecolodges we were greeted by an individual who was one of the rudest people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. He came bounding over shouting "why are you here, we have no rooms for you, double booking, double booking" he followed this up by telling us that two gentleman walked in off the street and took our reserved room at 12pm. His bright idea to remedy this problem was to make us sleep above the lobby on a mattress with no pillow or protection from the insects (at $10 per night). We were in absolute disbelief at what this guy was saying to us and when we asked if he could help us relocate to another hotel he smirked and said "no no not my problem". He refused to refund our deposit and when my girlfriend said that we were not happy with the treatment this individual was giving us, he very childishly smirked and said "no no no". I would advise anyone to look elsewhere when booking a holiday on Cat Ba as this hotel has no regard for its customers.

Room tip: Look elsewhere

We stayed at the Cat Ba Eco Lodge for 4 nights, arriving after a long bus/boat/bus trip from Hanoi. We were collected from the drop off point and driven along a crazy road (or soon to be road) to arrive at the lodge. The staff there were all extremely friendly and helpful, even if it was sometimes a little hard to communicate. That said, the guys organised every tour for us and our trip off of Cat Ba, with everything running like clockwork. We were actually the only guests there and it was lovely having the place to ourselves.

We booked a 2 night tour through the cat ba eco lodge, the first night was spent on a boat in Haa long bay and the second night at the lodge.
The tour promised a "luxurious air-conditioned cabin" on the boat, what this turned out to be was a 4 berth cabin with open windows to ourselves and a threadbare mattress. The boat was parked in a quite busy harbour so the captain could go and play cards with his mates, what this meant was that between 4-6 in the morning we had a continual parade of very loud boats go past our boat. The food was lovely and the staff on the boat were attentive.
What was difficult to handle was the difference between what was advertised and what was delivered, I know you might say "it is Asia" but when I complained I was offered $5 each off! Which is just a little poor!
The rest of the tour was excellent which is why it gets a 4 rating, the guide around the national park and the hospital cave was brilliant and the food at the lodge was excellent, we loved the remoteness and authentic feel of the place.
