I hate to pour cold water on this love-fest but our experience wasn't without reservations (sorry, no pun intended!). The good things: the staff were lovely and helpful welcoming us and catering to our simple needs throughout the 18 hours we were at the Fogado. The food was simple but plentiful. I wasn't bothered by the dining room festooned with animal heads, antlers, pelts and so on, but it might bother an anti bloodsports guest (or a vegetarian!)

Then the not quite such good things: a bottle of wine? Certainly. This is what you're getting - no choice, though we could see plenty of bottles on shelves. You want it cold? Too big for the fridge, so I had to insist it went into the icecream cabinet... Coffee for breakfast? OK but no refills.

Room 1 just beside the reception desk sounded OK but it was so cramped you had to remove a huge chair if you wanted to get round the bed to get to the bathroom (unless you rolled over your partner of course). The least satisfactory thing was the bathroom. It was a complete moulded unit so if you had a shower the floor was treacherously wet. The floor was sort of wobbly plastic which is very unsettling. The shower curtain clung clammily to your body every time you moved and if you bring a cat with you you won't be able to swing it...

Some rather noisy guests and a few drunks in the street took the gilt off the gingerbread: sorry, but the staff were really nice kids and did their (untrained?) best.

The Fogado was nicely placed 10m from the Danube shore though on the main road through town. A lot of incredible flood damage evident in the town which they are doing everything possible to repair, but it must have been pretty devastating for everyone: St Istvan seemed completely OK I'm happy to report.

My husband and I stayed four (4) nights at the Szent Istavan Fogado and were delighted with our stay. The Inn was spotlessly clean, extremely well run and in a beautiful location. The rate included a lovely breakfast of meats, cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit and coffee/tea, juice in the morning. Our room had a lovely patio outside to sit and enjoy the lovely view of the Danube. Nagymaros is a wonderful village (about 45 mins. by train from Budapest), well worth a stay of a few days, as you can walk or ride along the river or venture in to the national park nearby. We travelled by ferry across the Danube to the village of Visegrad and visited the Royal Palace, which is well worth it. As well, we were fortunate to be in town on a Saturday and attend the local market which was wonderful, full of local crafts, produce and smoked meats. Truly a feast for the eyes and stomach.

We chose this hotel based on its proximity to the train station and the pier at which the ferries from Budapest dock. It turned out to be a great choice and we highly recommend it. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, with free WiFi, a refrigerator and they are also quite spacious. The beds are excellent! Outside our door was a veranda with table and chairs for relaxing in warm weather. The staff is very friendly, helpful - providing us with their own trail maps of the area - and flexible - allowing us to keep the room until our train departure. The breakfast, which was included, is sumptuous! We hadn't had such good food during our days in Budapest. Make sure to remember that the hotel uses credit cards to hold the room, but expects to be paid in cash. Nagymaros is a small town off the beaten track and most everything is paid in cash. Although the staff has little English language capability (and some German), we had no problem communicating. The hotel's location is ideal for hiking in the Danube Bend park, which has stunning views of the Danube and the Carpathian mountains.

Room Tip: Ask for room number 5 or 6. Both are set back from the road and have a veranda.
