This was a really interesting visit. The buildings are worth a visit and the frescoes, although damaged, are remarkable.

A short drive from Fier away, Apollonia is a very nice archaeological site in the Albanian countryside. The road from Fier to Apollonia is partially paved, partially unpaved but fully navigable in a small city car without any major problems. Once there you can visit the small but charming museum displaying artifacts found at the site, as well as the small orthodox church. You can then go on to explore the site itself which presents well preserved ruins scattered across a vast area. As with all archaeological parks in the Mediterranean area, visiting in summer can influence your ability to properly appreciate the site (enter without a hat at own risk) but it is nevertheless well worth it.

Our mistakes were arriving around noon, so it was so hot we couldn't do justice to the site. Because of that, we left early, without exploring the area properly, and missed the church and museum. Be warned, the road there is horrific, probably the worst we had in Albania, where the roads are normally very good.

We visited this site just as the sun was beginning to sit and all of the views were just beautiful. The museum was awesome and the tour guide accommodated A short tour even though we arrived just around closing time. Such beautiful views so worth the drive out of the city. Would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Splendid view virgin local cafe above the Apollonia museum. Must try. Hard to find. Go up the hill from the museum and follow a little sign Restaurant. The freshest frogs and tasty local chicken served with fresh rosemary which our young waiter cut just behind our table. Extraordinary authentic peaceful place in the shadow of 500 yo olive trees.
