My wife and I spent one night here last week. The "cozy double" was totally cramped and in most hotels we have visited would be sold for single occupancy only. The upper two floors are a maze of small corridors, fire doors and staircases. This is not a hotel for the elderly. The place was full for a golf event when we stayed, and clearly it does not have sufficient parking. We found a spot on the smaller car park, but soon saw that we could well be parked in when we wanted to leave the next day. Dinner was OK but we essentially had pub food at restaurant prices. Breakfast was acceptable but the cold buffet table was a sad affair and the staff were slow to top items up. This was fairly typical of the lack of attention generally. We would not return.

Good afternoon John,
Thank you for your honest feedback - in circumstances where we are able to make improvements, when we receive feedback - we do indeed do so. When guests contact us directly for bookings, we do inform them that the Cozy Double is a little room - unfortunately we are unable to advise when bookings are made online. The same applies when we are asked if we have a lift or not. We really do apologise for the inconvenience you experienced whilst visiting us. Hopefully in the future, you will visit us again and have a much better experience.
Take Care and Kind Regards

Stayed in one of the garden rooms for a couple of nights was perfect, clean, comfortable and plenty space plus a nice decked area to sit out in. Staff were superb, especially Rachel who had a great knowledge of whisky. We ate at the Boat each night and the food was delish, again the staff were brilliant will defo stay again

We live only an hour away, and have visited the nearby Strathspray railway many times; we have also had coffee here in the hotel before now. As the season was coming to a close and my husband had always fancied staying in this hotel, when the railway was running, we booked for a nights stay and an evening meal. What a disappointment! We have stayed at quite a few localish hotels post lockdown and post our foreign holiday cancellations, but this was the worst! The room was advertised as a cosy double and we have had small rooms in the past, it has not worried us as we spend most of the time out of the room, but this was smaller than small, in fact it was very clearly a single room with a double bed somehow sqeezed in - for £137.00! One side of the bed was against the wall, so you had to climb over the bed to get in, or ask your partner to get out of bed each time you wanted to move, also of course, no light or table that side. I am fit and healthy, but any older person might have difficulties with this arrangement. The evening meal was one of the worst we have ever had, and we are happy with anything from The Three Chimneys on Skye to Platform 8 in Inverness, as long as the food is cooked OK. This was not, the scampi and haddock was clearly over cooked, or re-heated and the chips totally pale and underdone. The olive and bread starter we ordered was a disgrace - a bowl with the contents of a jar of olives tipped in, awash with olive oil, and no means to spear the olives. The bread was a slice of white supermarket white bread, cut into four soldiers; we have had this starter in many a pizza place even and the bread is usually crusty and a selection, the olives (coated in a little oil) served with cocktail sticks. The worst thing, we had to pay £17.95 for these below average mains and service charge on top of everything. The service at breakfast was slightly surly, and disinterested. The Scottish breakfast had one sausage over cooked and one completely underdone, the beans were cold. The veggie breakfast had Scottish pancakes that I could not get my fork or knife into, the beans were cold again and the sausage was just about cooked. The older male waiter who served us, opened a nearby back door, which left us frozen, until another Scottish diner closed it for us all. All in all, this felt like a tourist hotel where they felt they could pack them in anyway (hardly anyone might return) so why bother too much with anything? It also felt as if no one was in charge, no overall manager, no grown up with hospitality experience. We were left feeling ashamed that Scotland could offer such poor hospitality, below average food at inflated prices and treat tourists from around the world with such surly indifference.

Room tip: Go somewhere else!

Driving up to this hotel, it looked promising, inviting. A lovely outdoor seating area on this quiet road through a quiet village looked great too.

Other reviews mention a shortage of parking. We didn’t have that experience but it is quite narrow to get in and out.

We were warmly greeted and shown to our room (a suite) on the first floor. No lift so if you have big suitcases book a ground floor room. The staircase is narrow and has a fire door to navigate before heading up. The smell that hit us when we opened the fire door was a cross between a farmyard and wet wool. It was most unpleasant.

Opening the door to our room, the bad smell disappeared and was replaced with a pleasant flowery smell. The room was large with a big four poster bed. A double aspect gives one view of the Speyside steam railway line and the other of the side of the hotel. It is also a bright room. If you are disturbed by light at night, the station is well lit and the curtains are too flimsy to block out the light.

I should also mention the heavily stained carpet which was a bit off putting.

We had been well advised when we made the booking to book the restaurant. It’s surprisingly busy if you want to eat in. We did on the first night. We played safe and I had a burger while my husband had the highland burger. Both were OK. Chips were good. My husband also had chicken wings to start which were not good, very dry and lacking in flavour.

The staff were attentive and pleasant.

Other observations from our stay:

Our room wasn’t hoovered, our bed was not properly made (see pics) and when we placed our towels on the bathroom floor to be replaced (as instructed) the same towels were put back. I know because there was a mark on one of the towels which miraculously was on the “replaced” towels.

Breakfast on day three was a fiasco. The milk was off and with only two members of staff on, the poor girl on duty got terribly flustered not surprisingly as it was her responsibility to change it which meant cleaning out the now- working coffee machine as well. This occurred at the same time as the hot water jug ran empty. No breakfast orders could be taken while this was going on.

In conclusion, the hotel is perhaps basking in its former glory. It is understaffed and needs someone at the helm to improve overall standards. Whilst it didn’t spoil our stay too much, it was not value for money at all and we wouldn’t stay here again.

Room tip: Parking is tricky in the front car park. If you turn up the side road just after the hotel you can access the top car park.
