We arrived at the old lodge after booking 2 rooms in the annexe. We were over the moon to find out that we had been upgraded to superior rooms as the hotel wasn't too busy. The rooms were beautiful and full of character. There was a beautiful bath in the ensuite. Unfortunately we didn't want to use it as there was the previous guests hairs still on the bath after a shave.... such a shame because it is a beautiful place! A good clean and would give it 4 or 5 stars!

We cannot fault the welcome we got from staff or the stunning nature of the property. We love staying in historic buildings and enjoying the atmosphere. While you don’t expect them to be pristine, the decor of our feature room had seen better days. We bought a few points below to the attention of the receptionist when we checked out, which she said she’d raise with the manager:
1. The four poster bed was beautiful but the mattress so hard it made for a very uncomfortable night. It gave no support to your body and I was in actual pain by morning.
2. The paint was peeling off the walls in places, particularly the bathroom, which was very basic and quite disappointing given we had paid extra for a feature room.
3. There was a yellow stain on the carpet near the window which needed removing, instead a small table had been placed over it which came across as trying to hide it.
4. We asked for breakfast room service which was 15mins late. My porridge had no toppings offered with it, and my partners ‘full English’ was over cooked.

It’s such a shame as this could be an amazing place to stay and the location is perfect, if only some money was put into doing a proper refurbishment.

This is a lovely, step back in time, country house hotel.
So close to the characterful square of Malton, literally less than 10 minutes walk down the road.
We paid for a feature room for 3 nights, got room 9, four poster, ensuite walk in shower (no bath) which was perfect for us (the War Department does prefer a bath however!).
We like older hotels, slightly worn at the edges, which displays character.
The only disappointment was the food.
We arrived later in the day, visiting our daughter, she was tired after work so decided to eat at the hotel.
Mrs. had a luke warm soup with no depth of flavour, followed by a trio of curry dishes which were lousy to say the least!
My "seared" salmon was overcooked, and no crispy skin.
Needless to say, we didn't eat here again.
We raised our disappointment with the waitress, who said she'd let the manager know.
Withdrew to the small lounge after and waited and waited.
Decided to retire and no contact since. We found many great places to eat in Malton, it's a pity this hotel doesn't get close to what they offer. We would stay again because the rooms are great, but won't be eating in unless things change.

What an incredible beautiful fun experience. The bar is open 24/7 and you don't want to leave the grounds! The staff were incredible. The place is extra spacious and clean. We will definitely come back to this romantic lovely lodge. the Rose and Crown and Blue Ball Inn are just around the corner!

We had a lovely time here. Cosy and warm. Our room was spotless. Roaring fire in the bar. Wine was very good and I’m fussy! So much smoked salmon at breakfast I couldn’t eat it all. Same with last night’s cheeseboard. We read the other reviews and had some doubts but it was great. The staff were very friendly but unobtrusive. We don’t mind a faded stair carpet!

Room tip: Plenty of parking.
