When we booked a couple of nights at Las Sirenas, we did it with eyes wide open based on the reviews here and elsewhere. It just looked more like the location and setup we were looking for compared to other options in the area. The hotel is relatively small, sitting on the side of a hill that slopes down toward the beach with direct beach access. There are great vistas throughout the property and our room had a view of the sunrise over the ocean in the morning. We stayed in #10, a beachside unit with a bedroom separate from the kitchen/second sleeping area.
When we checked in, it was almost as if the care taker was surprised to see someone. He had to make a call to get someone to come and check us in. Not a big deal, but kind of provided insight into what was to come. It was mid-week and it turned out we were the only guests at the hotel for the two nights we were there. One unit seemed to be occupied by caretakers. We didn’t feel uncomfortable, but it was a little bit eerie.
The unit was fairly large for a couple and had a nice patio with an ocean view as well as a kitchen with full size fridge that worked well. It was very quiet (obviously, with no one else there), picturesque, easy to access the beach and a short walk to several beach restaurants. The A/C in the bedroom also worked well as did the TV.
However, the property has definitely seen better days. There was a water leak in the kitchen that became a puddle about an each deep covering the whole kitchen floor. There were several chips/holes in the walls and they could use a fresh coat of paint. Internet access was non- existent, although they provided me with the WIFI password. On our last morning, the shower head blew and water went all over the bathroom. There was what appeared to be bird poop on one of the beds in the second sleeping area. There was no housekeeping – again not a huge issue for a two night stay, but for the price of the room…
Outside, it didn’t appear that the landscaping had been tended to in quite some time, with the exception of a large tree that had been extensively trimmed with the trimmings still sitting where they had fallen. The very small infinity pool, which looks very attractive with a great ocean view, didn’t appear to have been cleaned any time recently and had lots leaves and plant debris in it to the point where it wasn’t comfortable to be in it. They did appear to be working/renovating one of the rooms, but it was just a couple guys, apparently retiling a room. The property needs much more than that.
I had a difficult time communicating with the employees at the hotel. I speak enough Spanish to get by in Mexico, but it was pretty much useless in Panama, as I heard it would be. When visiting a foreign country, I don’t expect they’ll speak my language, but it made it difficult to express what was wrong or what needed attention in this case.
This is a beautiful property with tremendous potential. It’s sad that they’ve let it get to this state. With all that said, my wife says she would still visit again because of the beauty, location, access to the beach and restaurants, etc. That’s the reason for the rating of “3”. For the quality of the room itself and the overall maintenance, I would give it a “2” at best.
