After a grueling 22 hour journey from LGW, the 15 minute speedboat arrival across a large lagoon did not disappoint. The resort is on the Southern half of the most Southerly Maldives and is basically nestled in a thin strip of sand and vegetation nearly three miles long and mainly just 50 yds wide. The resort is very spread out along this strip. All villas are the same and found in groups of eight to ten unobtrusively set within shoreline vegetation. A track meanders from one end of the resort to another.
Each villa is large and well appointed. They have a small but adequate semi-secluded ‘garden’ immediately in front with all Sunset villas having their own ‘secret’ path to the sandy beach. Sunrise villas do not as their outlook is (East) onto the rocky and shallow shelf facing the Indian Ocean. Sunset villas have the benefit of the atoll’s inner lagoon where you can swim.
Food in the dining room was varied and very good - no complaints at all. The two a la carte restaurants did not appear to be operating so we were stuck with the huge main dining room. The whole resort seemed generally deserted despite being just over half full. In one area away from the centre areas dining rooms and pool had been abandoned probably because of the lack of occupancy.
Everything is extra and all is changed to ones room – a good idea and works well. You do get two free bottles of water in your villa a day but all drinks cost including water. Can of beer is $7 and glass of wine $8, bottle $55. Bike hire is $4 per day but you can’t really go anywhere - although as villas are so spread out, it can take 20 minutes to walk to the restaurant and central bar, most hired bikes for that. A free shuttle service via golf cart buggies is available all the time. The adjacent town appeared deserted and there is nothing to see there anyway – the only two things on the island.
All staff were very friendly indeed and made one feel very welcome.
Our disappointments were few. The local coral close to the beach appeared dead with few fish – apparently due to the tsunami. The swimming was shallow although acceptable at high tide. Our highlight was the dolphin trip where we saw a hundred or more and it was that ‘tropical island’ just South of the equator.
