Honest review of our recent stay June of 2021

This place was NOTHING like we expected. This is nothing short of “glamping”. All that you get in your room is a bed and towels. No TV, No safe, No air conditioning, No refrigerator, No coffee maker, No windows (only screens) No water temperature adjustment (even in the shower) No WiFi in the room. No bottled water (you have to buy that). You can literally see through the cracks in the boards that are the walls. No kidding. The outlets would not allow a light to stay on while plugged in to charge phone and camera (see picture). The bathroom swung inward and had no pull handle to open it from the inside. There are literally nail claw marks in the wood bathroom door from people trying to open it. (See pictures)

If what you are looking for is just a little more than tent camping, then this is for you. Then again, you most likely wouldn’t have to worry about mosquitoes biting you inside your tent.

Our bedding was always damp due to the humidity and there being no windows. Bugs and mosquitoes in the room to where you have to put on bug repellent just to go to bed. Bed is hard and with no air conditioning, you spend the nights sweating.

THE BEST PART OF THIS PLACE IS THE STAFF. They are nice and the food is good.

To go into town from here you need to get a cab. Too far to walk to get to the road as this is on a long dirt road. Besides swimming in the pool, there is nothing to do here. NOTHING.

Like I said, this was nothing like we expected. Not even close but hey, this may be what you are looking for. Just know what to expect.

Great setup with many beautiful plants on the premises and great access to a beautiful and very clean river! Very clean rooms and delicious food. Perfect rainforest surround sound ;) The staff was friendly, especially the manager David, who was always open for a chat and providing useful tips, and our rainforest guide Mario, who is insanely knowledgeable and patiently answered our endless questions with joy. Definitely recommend!

This is our second time in Ecuador. This time we came with our family. We loved Hakuna Matata, Cosme was an angel, he took good care of us on our horseback riding trip ensuring everyone was well saddled and had the proper helmets. He is great with the horses.

The food at the lodge was great, we loved the steak, if you go you must try the steak, one of the best cuts we have had in a long time.

Rooms were nice and the kids loved the pool.

Staff is friendly and helped organize a night excursion along the lodges trail. They were kind enough to loan us rubber boots for all excursions, even those outside of the lodge.

We booked this trip through Voyagers travel, they were amazing in choosing locations and trips for us.

Room tip: The cabanas are the cheaper rooms, but the most authentic! Loved them

Hakuna Matata was an ideal destination! We selected this lodge for the activities and its relative location to Quito. We were able to arrange a taxi through the lodge to pick us up in Quito and take us the 3 hours with a bonus stop at Papallacta Thermal Springs. We were graciously received by David and given an upgraded room! The grounds were so beautiful; it was nice to just lounge by the pool and take it all in. We went hiking around the grounds, waded in the river, and took great nature photos. The food was divine and we were given plenty to eat at each meal. Every staff member we interacted with was polite and patient. As far as activities, we went horseback riding through the jungle, visited a local community, saw the parrot lick, went white water rafting, and made chocolate (4 days/3 nights). These were all phenomenal experiences and well managed by Hakuna Matata.
I planned on wearing long pants/sleeves and using lots of bug repellent for most of the time here due to mosquitoes. However, there were barely any mosquitoes around the lodge and I was fine with shorts and bug spray on the excursions away from the lodge. And I was intimidated about what creepy crawly things might show up at night but the rooms were very clean - no issues with insects in the room.

The place situated at the middle of a rain forest, well designed, very well manahed by David from Belgium.
We Enjoyed it very much, the food was very good so were the deserts.
The place offer many attractions and quiet close to the river.
We warmly recommend it to our friends
