This open plains zoo is about 50 minutes drive from Adelaide . It is distinctive because it is open plains and this gives it a big advantage over conventional zoos.
On entry , one can take a pleasant stroll to view the wild life such as the chimpanzees , koalas and other native animals .

One can take a bus ride and view the giraffes , cheetahs , zebras and the other fascinating wildlife.

However , the highlight is the lions. This is a must see and worth the extra $80 or so . One walks down a sheltered walkway and then at the end is a giant like cage . The guides then enticed the lions with food and before we knew it they were running all over the side and top of the cage . These are fearsome creatures and aptly named the “ kings “ of the jungle . One will never ever get so close to these majestic yet ferocious creatures . We all shivered when they growled . Even the toughest and cockiest persons will show deference to these animals who undoubtedly would have ripped us to pieces without the cage .Just watching them eating , prowling around and interacting with each other is an experience you will never forget .

Everyone was mesmerised by this truly remarkable experience. A must see.

This is perfect for a family day outing, the kids will love the free-roaming animals. The lion 360 is the attraction of the place. But all the other sections are awesome as well.

My recommendation is to get the annual pass which is 105$ for adults (if I remember correct) and you can use the same membership to multiple zoos. This is a great deal provided that you make at least 4 (since a single entry is like 35$ per adult) visits to any of the zoos during the 12month membership period.

We visited the Monarto Zoological Park during a long weekend in June. There were people everywhere and plenty of busses to run people around. The place runs like clock-work. The volunteer guides and bus drivers are quite knowledgeable and really make the experience enjoyable.
Lots to look at, some great walks and viewing platforms. Great to see the animals with plenty of room to roam.

We had interstate visitors so we took them to Monarto zoo this week. It was a perfect sunny day for seeing the animals. We caught the bus at the visitors centre and arrived at the white rhino area in time for the presentation by the keeper, she was very informative and there were several Rhinos in the enclosure. from there we stopped at the Carnivore area for the next presentation at the viewing platform where we saw hyenas with two small ones. On the far side were the painted dogs running along the fence..We followed on in the bus to the other animals in the open range area. It was great to see the giraffes peering in the windows of the bus. When we finished our bus ride we had lunch at the cafe.. From there we went to the chimpanzee area which is a bit away from the main area and all of them were out in the sun having great fun with the small ones. We also looked at the meer cats near the cafe. This is a great place to see all the animals via the bus and you can get off at several stops along the way. You can also feed the lions for an extra fee in a caged area.
