Walpole Old Chapel

I drive past every morning, but used to live next door. It is an incredible 17th century building, probably a farmhouse originally, with a gallery and a fine pulpit. One of the oldest non-conformist chapels in England. But it is when the occasional chamber music concert is held there that it is worth visiting. It's ideal

I have wanted to visit this place for ages but it is not often open but having googled it I realised it is only open from June - September on Saturdays 2 - 4! It was once a lovely old Suffolk farmhouse but the Puritans transformed the lovely timber framed 16th century building into their simple chapel. It still houses the original box pews and the timbers which would have been in the roof of the old farm house can also still be seen. A lovely warm and inviting chapel which closed in 1970 and was taken over by the Historic Chapel Trust in 1995. It is manned by a handful of very knowledgeable volunteers. There is no admission fee to look round but donations for the upkeep are very welcome/ There is a delightful little building in the grave yard that houses a toilet. There are events held in the chapel from June to December and Quaker meetings are held on the last Sunday of the month at 10.30 am fromJune to December. If you want to see a rare building then look no further! Beautiful!
