We visited here from engelberg it was quite a long route from Lucerne to vevey then a bus no 201 to chateau de chillon but it was worth the pain as the castle is magical,it feels like you are walking in history, you can feel that historical vibe about the place,it sits on the shore of lake Geneva which makes the location so dreamy plus the entry is free with Swiss rail pass and they provide a very informative brochure from which you can read the sequences of seeing the castle which guide you very clearly about which place to see first

Chillon began as a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes.
The oldest parts of the castle have not been definitively dated, but the first written record of the castle is in 1005.
It was built to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass
From the mid 12th century, the castle was summer home to the Counts of Savoy,
who kept a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva.
The castle was greatly expanded in 1248 by Peter II.

I took a train, getting off a short walk from the castle. It is beautifully located on the edge of Lake Geneva. You can also take a boat from Vevey or Montreux. After my visit, I walked along the lake to Villeneuve, where I caught a train back to where I was staying.

This is a magnificent castle that has gone through many expansions, renovations, and restorations, since the 1100s. In the cellar you can see the huge jagged rocks it was built upon, and the supports make the cellar look like a cathedral. There are 4 courtyards, several great halls, a chapel, and numerous other rooms, with furnishings, weapons, and armor from different periods. You can see how the defenses of the castle were expanded over the years. There is much to read about the history of the castle and the items in it. I like to read all of the information, so spent about 3.5 hrs touring it. It was free with My Swiss Travel Pass.

We walked from Montreux to Chateau de Chillon along the lake shore. The walk itself is extremely pretty and you get a number of photo ops for the chateau. The chateau is very interesting to walk around and you get a sense of its importance in earlier times. Some of the rooms are very substantial. There is a nice garden and kiosk to get a drink and a snack. Well worth the walk but there is also good public bus and boat links.

We had a couple of hours left with us in Montreux, so decided to visit this place.

It was every bit worth of our time.

This place gives free entry to Swiss Pass holders.

It is very systematic tour of castle with the brochure that is given along with the entry tickets - all places are serially numbered and next to each other - which you just follow.

This place may not be suitable for people with walking difficulty as it involves a lot of walking and climbing stairs up and down.
