I get it, Roatan is an island in a 3rd world country. We weren’t expecting 5 star accommodations. But for $350/ night with PLENTY of other MUCH CHEAPER options all over West Bay, we were very disappointed. We felt like it was a bad joke and we were the punch line.

Any of the following problems could happen anywhere. But when they all happen at the same “Luxurious Mansion” over the course of a one week stay, it’s inexcusable.

- the shuttle didn’t pick us up at the airport like they promised. We contacted with them right before departure to coordinate. And no one was there. After waiting a while we ended up calling the hotel from our personal cell (will now have an international cell bill!) and they told us to wait 30-45 min until they could come get us. Then a taxi driver ended up taking us who tried to get us to pay him $30 for the trip. After a bunch of drama the hotel ended up covering it.

-Food poisoning from either their pico served with the quesadilla or the warm maraschino cherries they served us in our pina coladas.

-Every night there were either roaches or lizards scurrying across the wall. There are plenty of little holes in the “windows” and door seals that critters come and go as they want. A dying hummingbird and a crab tried crawling into our room as well.

- there was one water cooler for the “dining room”, kitchen, and for all the “mansion” rooms (champagne, oceana, coral, etc) It was frequently empty. On the first night I’m glad I noticed it and filled my water bottles so we had some to get through the night.

- there was no one at reception for most of the time. The water cooler was empty, no one was there to get a new jug. We needed beach towels, no one was there to help. We asked the bar tender to ask someone to put some on the table outside our room, while we went diving. No towels. The internet was down (for most of the stay) no one was there to help. My wife was puking and wanted a clean wash cloth, no one was there to help. You’d think with the $350/ night price tag there’d be someone somewhere. But no. What a joke.

-For $350 / night you think they’d provide some quality soap, shampoo, and conditioner. Lol. Nope. 1 washcloth for the 2 guests to split, a bar of soap and a vile of some crappy smelly stuff simply labeled “shampoo.” I get it we’re in Honduras, but really? We would’ve brought our own but figured they’d provide something better than the cheapest crap they could find.

- the door to the suite (Oceana) had to be locked just to simply be closed. That means you have to carry the 3 keys attached to a wood block every time you leave the room to get a glass of water

- the floor in our room got gross throughout the week. It wasn’t swept when they serviced the room. They miss it once? Ok. Twice? Three times? The accumulation of sand and sun screen over a week was pretty gross. I wanted to clean it my self but I was tending to my puking wife. Also, there probably wouldn’t have been anyone to find a broom for me anyway...

- last, it lacked the personal touch you’d expect from the #1 (& likely most expensive) bed and breakfast in West Bay. No one was there to greet us when we arrived or departed. No one really seemed to notice or even care we were there. Part of the reason we chose to stay in a smaller or more “low key” spot was we didn’t want to be treated like like “guest number 234.” Instead we were treated like we weren’t even there.

The one additional star was for the pool, the view and putting flowers on the bed for Valentines Day. You don’t need to be staying at the resort to use the pool. It’s tucked away at the top end of WB, so it’s low traffic. You can come up and stop for a beer to escape the cruise crowd on the beach, then retreat to your hotel or bungalow that’s half the price of this place.

Kyle - Thank you for your input. As I review the things you have written, all I can say is that we are truly sorry for the lack of attention you felt at Caribe Tesoro.

Your review isn't reflected in any of the other reviews here on TripAdvisor. And I'm not sure if the tone of your experience wasn't set by the mix-up at the Airport.

We aren't in the business to contradict our guests. We have 20 people on staff at any given moment. Six of these are assigned to housekeeping and there is a general manager, a day manager, and a night manager. They should have introduced themselves to you in the beginning to welcome you to Caribe Tesoro and frequently checked with you to make sure that you were happy.

We are very surprised to hear that they didn't do that, though you don't mention bringing any of this to their attention either (not that you would need to because they should have been involved personally from the very beginning, especially following the transportation issue.)

We are sorry that your wife fell ill. We did ask you about this and at the time, you said that you'd eaten at other places along the beach. None of our other guests reported any issues with the food nor were there any reports of food poisoning at this small B&B. As we were sold out during this time, and as the Pico and Cherries are served constantly, you would expect that if there was a food issue, someone else would have experienced. We did examine that you'd eaten at no less than four other restaurants while here on Roatan. These were posted reviews by you on TripAdvisor. Three were in West Bay and one was in West End.

Caribe Tesoro does not staff the reception desk 24 hours a day. With 11 rooms total in the property, you wouldn't expect that but given the extraordinary issue of your wife being ill, there should have been a contact number available to you and we have now made that available.

You mention that you asked our bartender to have someone get towels for you and put them on a table outside your door. We apologize for that, as our bartender is outdoors by the pool and housekeeping is in the courtyard. Apparently, he dropped the ball but as the pool was full with other guests, it's possible that he was overwhelmed helping them and didn't write it down. We are trying to figure out how to do this better in the future without having him leave his post.

As for the issues with housekeeping, we take pride in cleaning the rooms and making sure they are spotless. While we apologize for your experience, we had no mention that this was discussed with any of the three managers and they recall having contact with you on several occasions. Nor were issues of the empty water jug mentioned at any time to our managers. These large 5 gallon containers provide water to everyone on the property including staff and should have been replaced when empty. We have put out reminders to our staff that they are to replaced as soon as they are empty. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

We can't comment on the dying hummingbird trying to get into your room. As for the crab, we are on a beach and this is the Caribbean. We have built in their home and share the space with them.

We want to address all issues and this requires accepting criticism as that only improves our service.

While we don't see many reviews that are so negatively written, we will stand defensively about the comment that there were "roaches and lizards scurrying around on the wall" And that there are holes in the windows.

We take complaints like this very seriously. It was never mentioned to any of our staff. It was never mentioned to any of our managers.

Your comment "Every night there were either roaches or lizards scurrying across the wall." says this was a daily occurrence. We have regular pest control maintenance and we confirmed with the general manager that it had been done just the week prior to your stay. We found no evidence of roaches in our investigation.

And as for the lizards, as much as we try, we admit small house geckos do find their way into the rooms occasionally. They come in as very tiny hatchlings. As they tend to stay out of sight when people are around, they are difficult to remove. They sometimes come out at night but unless we can see them, we can't remove them. And we do not wish to kill them for two reasons. 1) that would require leaving poison trays out and it's dangerous as all poisons end up in the environment and we are next to one of the great reefs and take our stewardship seriously. 2) House geckos eat flying insects like mosquitoes and we find the relationship with them a positive one.

Regarding locking the doors to securely close them, these doors are all hand carved and they are very old works of art. Over time, the wood has a natural arch to it and some of our doors do have a bit of a bend problem. The ironwork that holds the door bolt is built into the masonry. Solving the problem would result in damaging this one of a kind door. We could put in modern security doors with code keys but these would completely ruin the style of the building. As you are the first person to ever complain about our doors, we can only say that we wish that you liked them. Sorry they were an inconvenience for you.

We've never had a problem with theft here and perhaps that is because the doors can't be left unlocked.

Someone pointed out to us that you constantly took several digs at Honduras as a third-world country. We will ignore those remarks.
We hope that we have dealt with the issues you've raised. We wish you well.

Just steps from the busy and active West Bay beach ! Close to several different types of restaurants and bars !

Great little boutique beachfront lodge.... just perfect for anyone. Looks just like photos, Carlos was super helpful with checking in scheduling activities and taxi service and is just an awesome nice young man like Michael the bartender (great Mohijtos!) and all the staff that make you feel like you are the only guests. Can't say too many good things about entire staff!!! Nice little menu and good quality food at great prices. The pool is lovely and right on water - beach steps away is most private part of beach as bigger places further down and at end. It's located on beach at quiet end of strip short stroll (1-2 minutes) from beachfront restaurants and activities. Will only stay there when back in Roatan - and hope that is soon - just not in rainy January . We had such a great time - and great accommodations were certainly big contributor to that. No need to rent car as taxi service isn't too expensive and roads suck. Besides other than a couple of activities - that include transportation anyway - and if wanted there are water taxi's likely cheaper to take you to West End.

We really are glad that you stayed with us and it was our pleasure to have guests as nice as you. The staff love making people smile and work hard at taking care of our friends. We do hope that next time you are here, we are experiencing as much rain. (This was one of the rainiest periods on record here and completely unusual.) We want you back as soon as you can make it... Best from all of us to you...

This was our first trip to Roatan and we loved Caribe Tesoro, the island and the people! Especially everyone that works at Caribe Tesoro, who made us feel like family from the very first day. We were a bit unlucky with rain storms pretty much every day during our stay (unusually rainy December) but staying at Caribe Tesoro made it all right because it felt like we were staying in a large luxurious house with friends! If we woke up earlier than staff were there, we simply started the coffeemaker in the kitchen ourselves. We stayed in the Oceana suite which had amazing views of the pier and the ocean. The hotel is clean, well maintained and very comfortable in an up-scale way. We felt completely safe. The pool and the swim up bar is really cool, and Puma is the sweetest bartender i have ever met! I do need to mention the staff again. Absolutely everyone were amazing!!!!!!! We would love to go back and stay at Caribe Tesoro again! :)

Those are such nice things to say about everyone... Puma got a kick out of your comment... And we knew it was you making the coffee. Thanks for mentioning that Caribe Tesoro feels like a home away from home. That's what it is... a home. It was designed that way for a family. And you made us all feel special too. But we hear you. Next time No Rain... haha... (This was an unusual weather pattern and we hope the future gets back to normal.) It was our pleasure having you ...

We stayed in the 3 bedroom villa and absolutely loved it!!! Excellent location, spectacular views, beautiful pool and 2 minute walk to the beach! We loved having our own kitchen, even if it had limited kitchen supplies.

Would most definitely return.

Thank you so much for the review... We are happy you enjoyed your stay and it was our pleasure... Just so we can do a better job with supplies in the villa, can you please make some suggestions about what you'd like to see there? Thank you... Hope to see you again soon.
