Colditz Youth Hostel
Reviewed 7 September 2017 via mobile

We booked online using the German booking form but the youth hostel promptly answered email questions and advised us how to complete the form in English. We booked a small dorm with bathroom for private use and included breakfast. The booking was confirmed by email and we were also informed that our motorbike could be parked in the courtyard and the price for joining the German Youth Hostel was added - 3 euros. On arrival, we parked and checked in at reception. The receptionist spoke perfect English and welcomed us and gave us our room key. It was a brilliant experience; the sun was shining brightly and we bought a couple of beers from reception and took them to one of the seating areas outside. Views of the woodland was amazing. Bedding was provided and you made up your own beds and had to remove the pillowcase and duvet cover on the day of check out and sweep the room. The room (205) had beds and table and chairs in the main room and bunk beds in a separate room. The bathroom was clean and functional. We ordered an evening meal for 6 euros each and enjoyed starter, chicken, veg and potatoes for main and fruit salad for dessert. The dining room was spotless and food very tasty and amazing value, as was the price for the one night stay. We walked to the pub that was signposted just near the entrance to Colditz but it was closed on Tues and Wednesday so we walked into the town square which took only 5 minutes. After returning we bought small bottles of wine from reception (soft drinks were also available) and enjoyed them outside. You will need your own toiletries. We had a quiet and comfortable nights sleep before stripping the beds and sweeping the room. A brilliant and unique place to stay!

We stayed here as a large group, as soon as we knew that we were going past and we could stay at Colditz it became a must do.
From booking to departure the helpfulness and professionalism of the staff has been superb.
The location speaks for itself, the rooms were large and in excellent order and extremely clean as was the whole hostel.
If I'm in the area again I would not hesitate to stay here, we only had one regret and that was that our schedule only allowed for one nights stay here.

My wife and I stayed in the modern Youth Hostel for the final night of a rail holiday to Saxony.
We has a large room with en-suite Shower and Toilet. It was very clean with comfortable beds.
A buffet dinner was organised in the refectory which was superb. Beers and soft drinks also available to purchase.
The Castle has a long history prior to its WW2 fame as an Allied Prisoner of war camp (Oflag4c). We had an excellent guided tour in English which included an historical overview. The recently refurbished museum has excellent displays and artefacts from the prison camp days with story boards in German and English.
The Castle sits in a commanding position above the village of Colditz with its white walls and red roof tiles it looks very imposing.
A very interesting place to visit with excellent accommodation we hope to visit again one day.

Visited early November 2016, and stayed for one night so that we were well placed for a Castle Tour the next day which had been booked for 11am.

To take advantage of the accommodation, one of us had to have paid for membership of the German YHA.

The Castle has huge history, and it was fantastic to stay within the Castle. We arrived at about 4.30pm - the room had been pre-booked - and were greeted by an English speaking gentleman who checked us in. All went well, and made our way to our room, via a lift.

The room was a good size, with 2 comfortable beds which we had to make with clean sheets which were folded neatly on the table in the room. The room was very clean, with a bathroom with a shower cubicle. Towels were provided, water was hot but there were no shampoos/soap. It was very quiet and in the morning we went for breakfast which comprised of cold meats, cheese, hard boled eggs, bread, jams and yoghirts. Coffee and Tea was available together with juices.

A great place to stay to explore the Castle.
