The Niagara Region has much more to offer than just the Falls itself. There are attractions and venues to satisfy numerous interests. In addition to the geology of the Niagara Gorge, there are historic battle grounds, two forts, and several buildings dating back to the War of 1812. One can learn the story of hydro-electric power generation , while viewing the massive turbines which do the work.
An abundance of gardens created and maintained by the Niagara School of Horticulture can be toured as well as the famous Butterfly Conservatory. The region is world famous for its wine production and other fruit crops. Niagara-on-the-Lake is the home of the Shaw Festival Repertory Theater. Shopping, dining, spas, boating, fishing, hiking and golf are all well represented throughout this area.
There are various winery tours available thoughout the Niagara region. (A number of wineries surround the City of Niagara Falls, more specifically Niagara-on-the-Lake.) They can make for a very interesting day of learning how wine is produced - along with plenty of sampling. Your hotel can direct you to the wineries. Alternatively, to a number of tour guides that offer full or half day tours to suit your needs and interests. Typically a van picks you up at your hotel and returns you at the end of the day.
